Actually just squeezing the hose (even with the car turned off) will cause the coolant to rise just from the displacement decreace in the hose itself. You have to look for it to rise
after you squeeze the hose, not in conjunction with the squeezing. If yours is working properly, you will be able to see it clearly, if there's any doubt at all, it's probably not working.
