CD headunit install help please (Techs)

Alright, the SS forums are way to confusing for this kinda stuff. Basically, with the cobalt, there are a number of wire harnesses with an argument for each. The guys at circuit city and best buy both told Bill and I that we need the $100 wire harness including the integrated bus that it runs through. Crutchfield sells the $15 GM wire harness which is what I ordered because I connected the circuit city unit and it did not work.

My question is can anyone explain to me if I will run into problems regarding my airbags or anything of that nature without the stock headunit. I know that GM integrates a great deal of things into the unit. I also need to know what the LowSpeed GMLAN Serial Data wire needs to connect to now that I am installing an aftermarket headunit.

Not to drag this on, but another thing I need to know is what all the second connector in the third picture controls. That cable will be no longer connected to anything.

Thanks,
Josh

I don't know about the 'balt, but I just unhooked it and bypassed all the factory shit and just ran all new heavier guage wires for everything. You can call metra tech support, they build these harness kits and test different cars all day.(386)252-9040... just ask for metra tech support.

What year is your Cobalt?

I second calling Metra. Those guys know their stuff.

I have an 06 balt. They sell a vehicle-specific dash kit at crutchfield and it has the info center on an LCD below the headunit slot. I didn't think I needed that because my info center is incorporated into the gauge cluster.

When I was connecting the harness I just returned, I was able to connect all but 4 wires to the factory harness. They were the steering wheel controls which is understandable because I don't have the standalone unit for that. The 10 volt reference which I am now guessing can just piggy-back off the battery source. (switched power) The GMLAN data serial like I stated earlier and the remote radio control signal.

The airbag thing is a sales gimmick. It's a load of BS. Think of the liabilities GM would have by routing this system through a radio, there'd be a lot of lawsuits over that one i would think.
