Car PC Cam

So I was in staples today and saw a pretty slick webcam from logitech. I got excited at the possibilities and decided to buy. That means ripping the car apart again and running more usb cables. I mounted the cam on the rear view mirror for now and a pin hole mic next to the ebrake. When I get bored with it there I will use it as a rear view camera or facing the drivers seat (new alarm can activate and start recording audio/visual when the alarm is tripped.. supposedly)

Quality sucks, but I guess I need to dial in all the settings, especially for night.

Oh ya, and FYI, i shut down at 80 as I am getting uncomfortable running any faster on the streets.

Your car sounds badass. Maybe it's just the camera placement, I don't know. That wasn' too bad of a picture at all though. Nice vid.

This is what you do for night visibility....

Remove the lens from the cam. Remove the IR filter. This will allow the CCD/CMOS to receive IR light as well as visible light. It will make the colors a bit off, but vision in night will be much improved, and if you install IR lights, it works as night vision.

Thats not a bad idea, I think I might try this. But we'll see, I think with some adjustments the software can render much better.

And its just the mic placment, car is stock. I thought the same thing first time I watched this, sounds sick!

Depending on camera type, there may not be a removable IR filter. Check the manual, the processor may have dipswitch settings to turn on Backlight Compensation which isnt always enabled by default. This will help in dim settings, I would recommend trying this before removing the filter (It is sometimes incorporated right into the lens).
Not even dSLRs have it in the lense/CCD/CMOS, they all have a piece of IR filter glass, that my be molded into some paltic, but still easy to remove. On one of my webcams, I had to cut part of the 'lens' assembly apart, but the lens itself was fine, and even still allows me to focus.
