Talking I finally have my trunk back!!!

So after almost three years with this big boy taking up my trunk...

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...fu728/biga.jpg

I was finally able to find some one local who knew a thing or two about the workings of audio systems. He goes by the name Mikeyredline around here, and this guy knows his shit. After talking to him, and giving him an idea of what I wanted, he built me a custom sub enclosure. Taking into consideration all of the little variables the RL has in the trunk, the shapes, the depths, and all the other mumbo jumbo technical stuff one must take into consideration, that I wouldn't know one thing about. He built me a sub box that not only works, but was made specifically for the RL's needs.

I would never have thought 2 little 8" subs could shake my car the way it does. The sound is so crisp and clean. You can hear every base line, every drum beat, and nothing is muddy or sounds distorted, and best of all though it shakes my car, because it was built for the RL needs there is none of that ugly rattling noise that you hear with the "riced out cars".

One of the things I asked for when I asked him to make this for me was my trunk space. I wanted a system that would be practical, but gave some good sound. This does it all!!!!!

I was in shock, when I first laid my eyes on it. I didn't for the life of me think that something that small was going to sound better than 2 12" subs I had. Luckily I was very wrong. This thing hits harder, louder, and cleaner than my other one, and I am very happy with the end product. The craftmanshit of the box itself was so much better than what I had. It was some nice thick wood, and not some cheap particle board or whatever the other shops use.

So I finally have my truck back, and my music is cleaner than ever. I just wanted to give a personal thank you to Mikeyredline, for making me this custom sub piece, it was well worth the money I spent, and wish I had found him before I went to buy my ugly behemoth of a sub box...

^^ incase you couldn't tell, that's my old box next to my new one lol

Thanks again Mike.

P.S. I made those pics links on purpose so the pics wouldn't be 4x larger than the the actual post lol...

That does look really good.

I was considering a custom fiberglass box, but that looks pretty useful for the size.

How much power, what drivers, etc?

This may be a dumb question here, but by drivers do you mean the subs??? lol I know nothing about this stuff, all I know is that you need a sub and an amp to run it... Hopefully Mike will be chime in on this to answer some questions lol....

As far as the power, he did tell me that this set up was really efficient. All you need is a solid 300W, and they can get louder with little power. He has mine set really low, I think he said half way or something like that.

I don't know if I answered your question at all lol...

Yeah, the drivers are the subs.

I've got a 400w amp mounted in my trunk waiting to power something...maybe instead of getting a box made up for my 12" sub I'd just get these two 8" subs.

Is he interested in making more? Not for mass sale, of course, because that would break vendor rules...

oh and just to answer the other question, these are subs you can't find on the shelves. These are a high end sub, not to many know about, which makes them unique... adding to the uniqueness of the RL

that is nice lookin. especially for 8's. im in the process now of me and my dad making some boxes for my 12's so that one huge box doesnt weigh down my car and takes up my whole trunk. were doin 2 seperate boxes each containing one 12" and gonna put them angled toward each other against the rear seats. gonna be powered by a 500W Xplode amp. hopefully it works out nicely. glad to hear urs sounds clean also. i dont listen to rap, so i want my rock music clean, but deep.

that's the way I have it... and man, like I said the bass and the drums are separate, it's not just one big muddled effect, it hits, and it hits hard and clean.

Thanks! I am very glad you like it. 15 years of doing this stuff and you still worry if you hit it right-on or not...

To answer Joe's questions.

1) It should be driven by a 300-500W amp.
2) Using a subsonic filter (which every sub should have anyway) the useable output reaches down to 25 Hz.
3) Since the design takes into account the acoustic space it lies in, non consumer (off the shelf brand) drivers and proper cabinet geometry, there is a natural 6to 9dB overall boost to the entire bandwidth of sound. I have not tested it, but I think it is not too much to expect 110+dB with ultra-low distortion.
4) The sub is designed to be transient perfect. This means that it does not "bump" harder than it "booms" or vice versa. What that means is with rap & R&B, you will get the hard hits, but with Rock, meta etc. you will clearly hear the walking bass lines plus the kick drum with no mud (pending the amp you use).
5) The box is EXTREMELY easy to drive. the way it "looks" to the amplifier is pretty close to an 8-ohm load across the mid-band of the impedance curve after the fS of the drivers, summed in open air. The amp stays cooler, and does not have to work as hard.

Most do not realize that even if a manufacturer says "recommended 1ft3 box" it has no real meaning without accounting for other aspects. Besides... where was it tested? by who? what was used? What are the box losses? etc.

So yes, dual 8" woofers can sound better than dual 12"s in the right circumstances.

Hope that helps answer you questions!!! Basically it all means that
