SCCA Test N Tune

Well, I took a bit of spooner's advice. Actually, I was gonna do it anyways, but bolstering a mod's ego never hurt right?..lol Anyhow, I dropped the SC2 a bit with the H&R sports and new kyb struts. Car handels GREAT now. Had some problems at the ole test an tune today though.

Yesterday I bought some nice shiney new BFG G-Force T/A KD tires. At almost $400 for just 2 of em, I couldn't afford all four, seeings how I just dumped $700 last week into the suspension and some more engine mods. So yea, 2 new ones up front. Kinda glad I didn't buy all 4 though, as I only put in 4 runs, 2 of wich I just kinda cruized to get a better feel for the track, and what do I find? The tred is peeling away from the sidewall of the tire. So now I gotta race tomorrow with my crappy Khumos again.....

Question is, have any of you IRL folks run the old SC's in SCCA, and if so what tires did you run? I called my "tire dude" on his cell. He was away from the shop but told me he'd try to return the BFG's as being defective and get me a different tire package Monday.

There IS a guy with an SC2 just like yours at my time attack races, he runs the Falken Azenis RT615's, can't beat 'em. If you PM RiceEater, he might be able to get you a set for a good price.

The SPC Racing '94 SC2 ITA car runs Hoosiers, but they are not cheap - save them for actual club racing. For lapping days, I use Toyo Proxes RA-1s (non shaved) - they work well, and will last damn near forever. Other guys have had good luck with Kuhmo Victoracers.

You should also talk to your "tire dude" about what you're gonna be using the tires for, because the KD tires, and the KDW ones I've heard some not so good things about in road racing. For the street, they're awesome, but as for a tire to hold up well in the type of racing you're doin, check out the Falken's. Sp00ner has said many times that at his races, something like 70% of the cars out there seem to be using them. I believe they are a cheaper alternative to the hoosiers, but you could check out the Toyo's too but I'm not sure how price wise they would compare to the Falkens. I've got the KDW II's and as much as I love em on the street, I wouldn't use them in competitions like SCCA or and other road racing because of chunking problems.

Yes, chunking problems, glad you brought that up. I noticed the KD's got, well chunks tore out of the inner treds. I thought this was a camber problem at 1st. Now I know.

Well I FINALLY got the tire situation more or less resolved. BF Goodrich, wich I assume has a rep at The Tire Rack finally got around to looking at the tires. They told me since the tires had been raced on they would only honor 50% of the warrenty to replace them. I didn't tell them I raced on them, they just kinda figured it out by the weird tred wear I guess.

At any rate I think I'l replace the KD's with KDW2's for now, and just go buy Hoosiers for some old 15's I have laying around. I got a fellow SCCA race buddy who works for Hoosier, who said he could get me a sweet discount.

Appreciate all the input too everybody. If it turns out I can get the falkins cheaper I may as well go that route. I've already blown my tire "budget" all to hell this year.....let's see how much worse I can do :-D

I'd still go with the Falkens... some of the other tires are 'race rubber' and if you plan on driving around town with them at all, or don't want the BIG hit that race rubber can put on you, stick with the Azienis... EVERY instructor that's not running race rubber is running the 615's or plans on running them soon. I paid $500 for my set. They should have been closer to $700 though.

another good thing about the Falkens is that they fall into all the SCCA street tire classes
