Question What tires for auto-X???

looking for recommendations on tires to get for auto-X

what size to get? same as stock? 215/45x17?

and what size wheels?

and where to get the tires and wheels?

around here it seems like all the stores just carry regular summer tires and all-seasons.....

If you have the money to spend, and are really serious about auto-X, check out the Falken RT-615. It will work for you in both wet and dry weather on the track. You won't however get 30,000 miles out of them. The next thing up from that is a racing tire. Check it out. www.falkentire.com

They sell a 215/45R17 87W. This is not a Z rated tire, although it is built for the high end street sports racer. Contact falken....they will guide you right. But, there is nothing wrong with the BFG either....good tire. Just not as good when wet.

Yeah, I've heard good things about Falken.

If you are really serious about autocross you will look at R-Compounds instead to street tires. Especially if you want to be competitive in Stock Class.

There are very few tires that fit our cars, and none of them are ideal.

First things first you have to look outside the box. And you are going to have to sacrifice something to gain the grip of R-Compounds.

1: Nobody makes a R-compound in a 215/45/17. Falken doesn't make that size either. Think outside the box. What tire has the same diameter but is wider? The 235/40/17 is the same diameter, but is much wider. However the only tire that is made in that size is the Kumho Ecsta V700, and if you've never had R-compounds before, you might as well just flush your money down the toilet! They are very fragile, require lots of negative camber and a smooooooth driver to hold up. Not to mention they must be shaved or they will chunk. (Don't ask me how I know!)

So, we are left with less than ideal choices. We can go with a 205/40/17 but that is going the wrong way, sacrificing tire size and diameter, plus it is only available in the V700 again. So that leaves us with 225/45/17 size. It's not perfect, but you do gain width even if it is at the sacrifice of gearing.
...Again it's not perfect. But your choice of tires goes up. You can now choose from Hoosier, Kumho, Yokohama and Hankook R-compound tires.

2. Get over the "reccomended rim width" already. It is one of the most useless things you can refer to when preparing a Stock Class car. I used to run 225/50/13 Hoosiers on 5" wheels on my old Civic Si!
(Contrary to most new people's belief, you do not have to stay with the stock tire size! Use whatever fits!)

3. There are no good wheel choices for the Saturn Ion Redline. Buy whatever you want for street wheels and keep the stock wheels for race tires. (It's what I did! )

4. Alignment: It is legal to slot the front lower strut mounting hole to get more camber. It's totally worth it. Negative camber is your friend!

5. Seat time, seat time, seat time. None of the above is anywhere near as important as this. You can prep your car all you want the the more experienced driver will beat you in his DD Camry!

Good luck and have fun autocrossing! It's my passion!

The Falken Azenis RT-615 is infact being released in a 215/45x17 size, but not until September.

For the cheapest prices on the old and new Azenis, goto vulcantire.com

1010tires is a joke.

what is wrong with 1010tires.com??

i don't know them from a hole in the wall, don't really know where to buy auto-x tires or drag tires for that matter.

what makes vulcantire better? the price alone??
