I've ordered tires numerous times from both Tirerack and Discount Tire Direct.
In my case, I have the tires delivered to a postal outlet just on the other side of the border and I go pick them up when they arrive.
Shipping is usually free or next to nothing when shipping within the USA.
I bring them through customs myself.
You always have to pay your usual taxes, and then there could be a duty charge depending on where the tires are manufactured. If they are made in the USA then there is no duty, otherwise it will be 5%-7% depending on where they were made.

Overall, it has been way less expensive than buying the same tires in Canada.

You could have the tires shipped direct, but the shipping fees to Canada are significantly higher, i.e. $100 instead of Free!
and if you decide to have them shipped by UPS then prepare yourself for their excessive brokerage fees that they will add on top of everything else.

That's a good idea, is a postal outlet just a regular post office, like you would see in towns here in Canada? Or is it like the huge distribution centres? I too am thinking of having some things shipped from the states.

I can make the border in 45-60 minutes. Prescott crossing where 416 meets 401....I usually cross at 1000 islands, closer to kingston, that is about 1h 25 to 1h 30.

sounds like a plan, I plan on ordering for myself
rims+ tires, plus RT-615s for the stock wheels
for my buddy
rims+tires for his grand prix...
maybe if we get ahold of tirerack we can bundle everything together and save even more...

although, a friend is trying to open a performance shop here, so we might go through him, depending on what kind of deals he can swing us...
