Angry wtf!!!.....over

can anyone explain this....or has anyone had the same problem?

saturday last week....i was driving to the "spot" to meet up with some buddies and go crusin...nothing different every weekend we cruise in HP...
going down 311 towards HP i was in 2nd gear at about 40 fixin to race some pile-of-shiz 88 prelude with a h-22 swap...((one of my good friends))...i floored it....and my FREAKING WHEEL FELL OFF....((yes offf!!!!!!!!)) my car...
it was the left front...3 studs broke...and the 4th bent real bad....not to mention my 150$ rotor is to hell now bc i flat spotted it half way to the center...

how in the hell could this happen....all my wheel rotating and everything is done at saturn..so they are torqued right with their little torque stick...

THEN!!!!!....i got it towed to saturn....
on monday i went to saturn to talk to the service manager....and he said it wasnt under warranty bc i have aftermarket wheels...((which again is bs ...bc according to the warranty people neither an aftermarket wheel nor tire will void any warranty if installed and maintained by GM certified mechanic...))
so all and all....
the total bill was around 795....
150...rotor
17.34 each for studs x8((i broke more when i ran over my wheel))...what a rip off
labor...289...
then they had the balls to charge me for stock lugnuts....when i bought my own...AND...stock ones dont fit in my wheels..but of course they tried...and completely scratched the shit out of my wheels...

please some one give me some advice....

p.s.-NO its not how much torque my car has...bc the stock studs are rated WAY over what my car has...

That really sucks. I have never had anything like that happen to me. I did have the nuts loosen up on my wife's minivan a few years ago. They got loose and the wheel was woobling real bad. She had complained about something funny a day or so beforehand, but I did not have time to check it out. It elongated a couple of the hole in the rim. I figured that either the shop that changed her tires last did not properly tighten them up, or someone deliberately loosened them up. All the others were tight.

I'm not sure there is much you can do. Maybe some others on here have other thoughts.

Who put the wheels on? Might be some liability there. Small claims action might set you right.

About a year ago I had 05 Vue come in with after market rims complaining about woobling feeling teck found the nuts came loose because the nuts where only held on by 4 threads on the stud so we put longer studs on and never had a problem after that .GL

Nope, Saturn is right-in your case it is NOT coverable by warranty. However, IF they were the last people to have the wheels off the car, then it is their negligence. Having aftermarket wheels raises some questions: Are the wheels lug or hub centric? If they are hub centric, do you have the proper hub rings installed so they fit on the hub properly?
Torque sticks...I don't trust them. When I ran a tire store or two, the rule was, use a stick that is atleast 20ftlbs LESS than what the vehicle calls for, then when it's back on the ground use a QUALITY HAND TORQUE WRENCH and torque them BY HAND to the proper rating. I NEVER had an issue with wheel off conditions. You can have them not tight enough OR as is usually the case, an over tighten condition. Over tightening can stretch the wheel studs to the point of failure upon power application-remember the wheel studs are rated for a specific torque value torqued in a PROPER sequence. Over torquing can also cause rotor warpage as well.
Now, even if they did torque to the proper rating and in the proper sequence, you still have the variable as to whether the wheel was PROPERLY seated against the hub. If it was cocked, even just a little, the torque wrench CAN give you a correct reading when the vehicle is on the ground-essentially the wheel is lodged against the hub and not 100% of the wheel mating surface is in contact with the hub-which upon driving, may survive during normal conditions, though you should notice some vibration and/or weird handling characteristics.

It is KEY that you snug the wheels down with the car still suspended in the air (no weight on the wheels) then after letting the car down, properly torquing the wheels to the proper value-COLD. Heat will effect the torque value as well-even the technique used to torque is crucial-the torque wrench should NEVER be "jerked" on-it WILL ALWAYS give you a false value! Using a smooth EVEN pressure to tighten will always give you a correct torque value. Other than corrosion on the wheels studs, I can't think of anything else that would cause this.

My advice would be to snag whomever last had the wheels off the car and reinstalled them and hang them by their thumbs. Sorry this is a bit long, however, when it comes to tires/wheels I'm anal-they are the ONLY part of your vehicle that is SUPPOSED to touch the ground and everything you do in that vehicle is transmitted through said wheels and tires.
If you have more questions, hit me up, otherwise let us know how you make out.

EDIT: Whenever you have wheels and tires off your vehicle it is good practice-after reinstall-at a low speed (less than 15 MPH) to sharply turn the wheel back and forth-however aggressive you can muster. The rapid weight shift will cause a wheel that isn't seated properly to rear its ugly head and it can be dealt with at a speed far less likely to cause serious damage/injury/death.
