Pardon my ignorance, but would the "top tier" gas serve more of a purpose other than build up? ex. better gas milage, burn efficiency, etc. . .

This is why I fill up with Shell. Although my internal combustion engine professor and engineer friend in that class that has worked at a gas station both told me that all gas stations buy their gas supply from the cheapest tankers around whenever they need it. I don't know how true this is, but it would mean that say the Shell station is buying and selling the same gas say a Marathon station might be selling. If this were true, then I hope that the Top Tier stations mix and add the fuel additives at each station before selling it, rather than lying that their gas meets the TT requirements.

Another interesting thing they both told me is that gas stations just buy the lowest grade and highest grade gas. The way they sell the middle grade is by mixing the high and low grades together to come out with the 89 to 91 octanes that they sell (depends on which is available in each area).

The TT gas that is made to reduce/eliminate these valve deposit build ups does help keep the engine very healthy. These deposits absorb fuel like a sponge. So your computer that detects A/F mixture will notice that it's running too lean, and ends up injecting more fuel than normal, meaning you're fuel economy lowers. The buildups also negatively affect the designed turbulence of the intake mixture into the cylinder. This means the mixture is not moving around the same way during compression and ignition as it does without deposits. This can have a bad affect on the way the flame travels for the fuel to ignite, meaning you may be losing horsepower.

I'll stick with my Shell stations (only TT around me). Even if they do lie and don't sell the fuel with the right additives, I'll do it for peace of mind. I don't pay more for Shell either, I find the cheapest stations around me, which end up being cheaper than most non TT stations...

I know that not all gas stations do that. There is a local company, that recently won convinence store of the year, that guaranties their fuel. It is TT, and they say if their fuel causes any problems that they will foot the bill for repairs. This company, Kwik Trip, also uses one supplier and ships their fuel themselves. However once in awhile you will see a no name company moving their fuel. That is only due to a shortage of tanker trucks but is still the Kwik Trip fuel. The shortage is only because it is a fast growing company. I actually would like to see them eventually become a nationwide chain.

We do have Qwik Trip's here, too, I've just never bothered to fill up there. They've always sold gas for the cheapest price, but their little shack attendant building thing always deterred me I guess. Since they are TT and you have this nice bit of info about them, I may have to memory lock their locations down and investigate them a bit more. Hopefully there's a station around my school.

That really sucks. I've been running Exxon gas because I get the best mileage, and my engine doesn't idle quite as rough as with some other fuels. I know someone else from Texas was saying that they like Chevron, I just can't seem to get the greatest mileage out of it, and the ONE Chevron station in Corpus Christi is at the most inconvenient spot. Damn the decision making.

Sadly enough, Kwik Trip hasn't made its way to MI so far. Right now they are in IA, MN, and WI. The correct spelling starts with a K. Also, Kwik Trip has the finest buildings that I have ever seen. The wouldn't have a little shack.
