I believe the axle splines at the differential are a different pattern. Shaft lengths may also be an issue. You could use Redline axles and I think they would still mate to the 2.2 hubs. The input shaft is probably splined differently as well. I think the bell housing will mate up to the block but I'm not sure of flywheel/clutch matchup. You would probably have to swap out the shifter and cables. Not 100% sure on any of these but they are possible problems you could run into. As of now I haven't had either transmission out of an Ion to compare... I'm sure someone who has could elaborate more.
They are swappable. Most forget that the MU3 was in the manual 4-banger L-cars. You would need the transmission, shift cables, mounts, halfshaft and axles from a Redline or CSS. The one variable I think there is, is the oil pan designs, you may need the updated pan, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

The only grey area that I'm not 100% sure about is the clutch/flywheel. I'm 90% sure you would need to switch to a MU3 clutch/flywheel. Might as well get an aftermarket couple if you are doing this all anyways. Exedy FTW! I'll check on the differences a bit later...

clutch/flywheel upgrade is already planned so yeah - not a biggie. i'm just worried about grenading the tranny eventually...
ironically, a "what would i have to do to upgrade the tranny?" question was on my mind all last night
