Bowser Pontiac/Subie FTW!

Gotta give major props to Bowser Pontiac / Subie, and the guy who was running the parts counter today.

Got up early today, around noon, and finally decided it's time to change my rear brakes...since I've been running on almost no pad since last August. About the time when I ordered the EBC redstuff pads from autopartswarehouse...well they arrived after a short few...months and have just been sitting here.

Drive out to where my dad works (airport), pull into the hangar, get the car up. Back wheels off. Ah, just two bolts and the caliper comes off. Cool. Off they come, and the old pads. Hold on a minute...I look at the pads, a nasty looking groove. The back of the rotors are almost destroyed. Don't know how they got so grooved (I forget to take a pic lol). Around the outer circumference, on both sides was a good 2 mm or so of rotor, like a ridge, and it was flat elsewhere.

Okay, no biggy. Run em down to Pep Boys...$15 to turn em. Well whatta ya know, they can't. Say they'll drop below the 12mm of thickness. I figure this is a ploy to get me to buy new rotors, so I let em check on a price. Haha. ION RL not in their system, or at least no listing. But they still tell me they can't cut the other.

I call Saturn. No help. Chevy. Nada. Then I remembered our brake system is off the G6. Call up Bowser Pontiac, guy has em, $104 a pop for rear rotors. I drive the three miles to their parts depo. Was planning on only buying one, since they turned the other one. Well I get to talking to the parts guy...he knows about the Redline, but wasn't aware of what a lot of us (and Balt) owners had done. He's a 04 Stang GT owner, who I think I converted. He wants me to take him for a ride.

Well as he's talking he types something in and says, "Hey, know what. I can get em to ya for cost. $61 for the rotor."

I'm sort of stunned, and say, "Can I get two?"

"Sure."

So I get two new rotors, for $120, covered in gray paint no less, with fresh EBC pads. Feels a lot better.

And he tells me if I need anything--say, a new LSJ motor--to get in touch haha.

Moral of the story, befriend the parts guy!

Did you have to compress the rear caliper to put the brake on? If so did you use a tool or do it a different way?

Use needle nose, grab it inbetween the 2 indents and twist is clockwise to reset it into the caliper

The rear piston needs to be threaded in.. do not try to compress it, you will only get REALLY pissed off when it goes nowhere.

Haha. Here's my convo yesterday...

My dad and I have the rotor on and are staring at the rear piston. Staring. Trying to turn the c-clamp and push it in. Staring.

I remove my cell phone, dial up Dan. "Hey man."

"Hey."

"Dude I'm changing my rear--"

"You need to use needle nose pliers and turn the piston," Dan says.
