can someone explain valvetrains?

So flipping through parts catalogs and I see hydraulic roller lifers, roller cams, mechanical lfters, 1.7:1 rockers, different degree lift/duration cams......what does all this mean what numbers are the ratios referring to? what do degrees mean when it comes to lift/duration. I've wondered these things for a while and never figured it out. Can someone please help me out, maybe some pictures of what each thing is. Any explaination would be appreciated.

All Valvetrain stuff is going to be somewhat different from engine to engine, but the basics are the same. A camshaft or multiple camshafts, turn at half the speed of the crank and have lobes on them that push against a lifter of some sort, depending on valvetrainstyle. The lifter pushes against the rocker, which uses a lever action to push against the valve tip, in turn compressing the spring to open the valve. The ration is what sort of mechanical advantage said rocker has, so if there is, say .100 lift at the cam, there will be .170 lift at the valve, on a 1.7:1 rocker. The degree specs are used because camshafts are round and rotating. Those numbers are basically telling you how long the cam is opening the valves for.
