Fuel Pump Cut Off on Me

Was real low on fuel tonight so I stopped at the gas station to fill up at $4.359 a gallon. Took 11 some gallons and the damn gas pump cut me off at $50. I wasn't quite full but figured I only needed ~1 more gallon and decided it was not worth putting the credit card back in for a couple more bucks. First time I ever hit the pump limit. Probably not the last....

That's odd. How do trucks and vans with tanks twice the size of ours fill up? Seems like they are limiting business if they do it all the time.

A few years ago when the gas prices were "really high" a station I used to go to had a sign on the pumps saying that the card swipe at the pump was only good for $50 and you needed to re-swipe to get more gas. There was no sign at the pumps I was at today. And this is the first time I have every put $50 worth of gas in any car I owned.

I suspect the $ limit may have something to do with liability on stolen credit cards.

Or stolen gas.

Most places I pumped at on my way to Texas had $100 caps.

Still seems stupid to me. I can see it late at night/super early in the morning, but during the day/evening its dumb.

Then again I am also thinking of my gas prices and not yours [where a full tank for our company van (twice the size of our cars) has been 100+ for 2 years now.. and that is regular gas.. not premium]

A couple of months ago I opened my credit card bill and found 2 charges for $80 and ~$42 for gas in Texas. One charge was right after the other, so it must have been a motorhome or something else with a big tank. So I call the credit card # to report it. I live no where near Texas and no one but my wife uses that credit card. So the guy on the phone is telling us that the Texas address may just be the billing location not where the gas was pumped. We are like OK, even if that was true, we could not possibly put that much gas in our car. Also we were on a trip to Myrtle Beach at that time and could account for all the other fill ups on the CC bill. So finally, he is like, Do you want to report these charges as fraudulent? Yes, DUH! So we talk to the fraud people. They say that the gas was at a pump in Texas and the credit card was used at the pump. So it was not just that someone had the CC #. Finally they say that maybe someone had a few "cloned" cards and tried them until one worked. I personally think the pump reader, or somewhere else in the billing/transaction/transmission system messed up and changed a couple of numbers around to end up with my CC #. No other bogus charges were on the account. Of course, they canceled the card immediately and set us a new card. Who knows what really happened.
