July 03, 2005 occurances

Mods, if you need to move this do so, please do not delete.

Excuse the long post, but this happened to me on the way to drop my sister off at the pool. I'm posting it here to make a public post of what transpired in case is necessary for legal reasons. I wrote it as if you are familiar with the area, as anyone who reads it from here would be.

Sunday July 03, 2005 approximately 2:45

I was stopped at the four way stop by K-Mart in Teays Valley. As I made a right hand turn onto Great Teays Blvd., a green ~1998 Ford F-150 was pullling out from BlockBuster's south parking lot exit. He entered the turn lane to my left. I tapped the brakes giving him a chance to pull ahead infront of me. However, he tapped the brakes at the same time. I then accelerated a little, as I anticipated him to enter the driving lane behind me. However, the driver of the truck also accelerated. I sped up a little harder to avoid confusion and to make it obvious it was clear for him to enter the lane from behind. As the truck quickly veers into the driving lane, he is tailgating me. I can no longer see his headlights in my rearview mirror. I brush this off as an incompetent driver and stop at the light at the end of Teays Blvd.

I make a right hand turn going towards the West-bound on-ramp to I-64. At yet another stop light, the driver is edging ever closer to my rear bumper. I now consider this a driver with a case of road rage, and I assume it was from the confusion as he pulled out of BlockBuster. I decided that as the light turned green and it was safe to enter the on-ramp, I would then accelerate a little harder than normal to try and distance myself from this aggressive driver.

As I was approaching the bottom of the on-ramp, there is slow moving traffic. However, the F-150 is too close behind me and it is unsafe for me to slow down. I check in the my mirrors and assure that the right hand lane of the interstate is clear. I then enter the right hand lane of the interstate, however I am beginning to pass the slow moving traffic which is still on the on-ramp. With the F-150 still behind me, I have no options left but to brake, which would almost certainly cause an accident, or move to the left hand lane. In the left hand lane, there is a tan larger car (possibly a Buick or Cadillac?) approaching. I decide it's best to enter the left hand lane and I accelerate hard to get my car up to speed. I glance in my rearview and notice that the F-150 is now behind the Buick and slow moving traffic is keeping him from passing. I set the cruise and forgot about him.

Approximately 2 minutes later, I see the F-150 quickly approaching in my rear view mirror. He is VERY close to my rear bumper, so I turn off the cruise to accelerate a little (My cruise was set just under 70mph, maybe in the 67-68mph range). I notice the truck is now moving to my side. He rolls down the window as he approaches. The first thing I notice is a child in the passenger seat, most likely his son. I can't imagine why someone would drive like this with a child in the passenger seat. The man is obviously upset over something and begins pointing at me and yelling in a very aggressive manner. At this point, I now feel as though this driver is a direct threat to the lives of my sister in the passenger seat, me, and my car. I decide to accelerate hard away from him. I'm quickly a car length in front of him, however he is still gaining. I must note that at this point I am now above the speed limit. I was travling approximately 80-85mph. I did not fear being pulled over as it would mean immediate security in this situation. In a moment where I lost my temper, I flipped him off from my driver's window. He accelerates harder and is again tailgaiting me. I can not see the top of his hood in my rearview mirror.

At this point, I'm now coasting back down to the speed limit I stick my hand out from the sunroof and make a number "5" followed by an "O." I hope to signal to the driver I am prepared to call the police if he doesn't back off. The truck suddenly pulls beside me again, still yelling and pointing. Again I notice the child who's face is wide with big eyes, the way a child looks when he is being yelled at by his father. I realize I cannot call the police without a liscense plate number. I tap the brakes and I am behind him. I have my sister scribble down his plate number, as well as the description of his vehicle.

We are now approaching the exit to the Hurricane Rest Area. The truck is veering towards the rest area as if he was going to see if I was going to stop. as soon as his vehicle is to a point where it cannot exit, I brake and swerve and exit to the rest area. Using my cell phone, I call my parents. I was unsure whether to call the police, for fear it would cause more problems than it would solve. I know that being a 19 year old in a performance oriented car, this would lead many that were not witnesses to believe I was the instigator. My parents advise me to forget the situation and to go about my way.

Thank you,
Sean Dill.

Exclamation

I'd have dropped a dime to 911 on him , you never know what kind of history that jerk had. If he has done something like that in the past the cops would have no choice but to believe you over him. The truth on how it happened (ommiting actual speeds, just say he pushed you uncomfortably over the speed limit, but you didn't pat attention to how fast you got) should be enough for the cops, why else you bother to take the time to call thenn knowing the penalties for false reports. Just my .02 worth.

I just got into a similar situation with a 60 year old dude - after going through an intersection, he pulled in behind me and began tailgating (about a foot off of my rear bumper) - I eased into the brakes, and at the next light, he jumped out and said "I'm real f***ing impressed with your brakes and your loud muffler, now I can impress you by kicking your ass!"

I'm not a small guy, I got out of the car (at an intersection, in my work uniform), and asked what his problem was - I had been going 5 mph over the limit, he tailgated me in a stupid way, and I got on my brakes just like the driver's manual says to - he wanted to fight, I walked away.

I got back in my car and drove off - he followed me the same way again, honking and flashing his lights. I called 911, and knowing there was a state trooper station a mile or so up, pulled into the station. The dude FOLLOWED ME into the parking lot! Two troopers came out as the guy was getting out of his truck. I explained what had happened, and he was arrested for "provoking speeches and gestures", wreckless driving", and "threats". I just wanted to go home to my wife after working 15 hours...wasn't in the mood for a fight. I'll enjoy going to court on this one.

Back to your situation, in ANY situation like that, don't put off calling the cops, don't try to provoke some idiot by flashing 5-0 or especially flipping them off. There are some crazy, stupid people out there, and you never know what's on their mind.

Yeah, it was pretty freaky - I mean from some pissed off kid, I might even expect it, but a 60 year old dude?

Wow man, sounds eerily similar to my post a month ago: Dodge Ram (why are women allowed to drive these??)

I called the 911 right away after she threw the candy or whatever it was at my car. Then I flashed the 5-0 hand signal at her. I probably should have followed her as she merged on to another freeway, just to see if she would get pulled over. But since I didn't, I won't ever know if she got away with her stupid antics or not...

Unfortunately in my situation, I COULDN'T copy down the license plate...because apparently when the stupid crack whore opened her drivers door in the bumper to bumper traffic, she must have got out and took her license plate off. Because when she got in front of me...no license plate was to be found, so I couldn't grab any number. At least you got his license plate number, you can and probably should report it to the police, just so they have a report on him in case he's ever caught for anything in the near future. That's my advice, do NOT let people get away with this totally dangerous behavior....

And Jim Lewis, how stupid can people be to actually follow you into a police station? Jesus. Christ. At least he got what he deserved.

What I don't understand is how you could not outrun a F150, since you said you dind't care if you got pulled over.

Me, personally, I would have pulled into a parking lot somewhere and got out of my car waiting. From what I've seen, people who try to provoke crap usually get scared and run off if they see you waiting for them. Well, this probably wouldn't be a good idea if you are a toothpick.

I'm sure he could have outrun the truck if he chose to. Who wants to be hauling ass through traffic with a loved on in the passenger seat because of some retard with emotional problems? It sounds to me like he made the right choice except for the gestures.

I don't know where you're from but around here fighting on the side of the road with a lunatic is a bad idea because muscles or secret ninja moves from the government don't stop bullets. I legally carry a firearm and so do a lot of people I know. It's pretty common place. You can be as big and bad as you want but people don't "play" fair.

yeah, that's why you provoke them to follow you where you have some willing and ready friends waiting to show them that they've barked the wrong cat up a tree...

it's happened before, and it probably WILL happen again. dumb bastards...
