when my timing chain tensioner went, it would intermittently clatter just like a diesel at idle. it would consistently do it on a "hot restart" meaning, drive it for 10-15 minutes, shut it off for half an hour and fire it back up and let it idle.
with the hood up, it sounded like it was coming from the passenger side of the engine, but i wasn't able to locate the sound just by listening closely
do either of the people in this thread who are looking for the answer have the capability to post up a video or sound clip of their noise so i can hear it?
our injectors do tick rather loudly, but you really only hear them if you're standing in front of the car with the hood up, not from inside.
you can use a screwdriver as a stethoscope to listen to specific parts of the engine. put the tip of the screwdriver against the part of the engine you want to listen to and put your ear on the handle.
the timing chain tensioner is a big 32 mm bolt on the passenger side of the engine bay, firewall side of the engine.
Q: What's the difference between a bolt and a screw?
A: First, you screw. Then, you bolt.
