Okay, so, I was thinking maybe, just maybe I would use my tax return and trade in the IRL for a down payment on a 2.0 R-Spec. Yeah, yeah, the 3.8 is better, I know, but I don't want/need a 18MPG/$30K+ Hyundai...
Anyway, after making some calls, and an appointment for a test drive tomorrow, I'm not so sure I'll actually be able to let the old girl go when the time comes. I still love the car, but she's kinda gettin' up there and my new job has a 45 mile commute each way in wretched Long Island traffic, I'd kinda like the pseudo piece of mind of a warranty being as I don't know how to do shit, a change would be nice, there are no other cars (other than a few completely out of my price range) that I really want instead of the Genesis... blah blah justification blah blah.
So, what I need, is for some of you that knows our car and maybe has driven one of these to tell me how shitty they really are behind the scenes. I need to know how my big dome will be scrapin' the headliner at 6'3", how the turbo lag can't get out the way of it's own 3500lb ass, how my own fat ass will curse me for Recaro withdrawals, and how much cooler I am driving a car that after 7 years no one has any clue is actually fast.
By "refined" I mean something that doesn't...I dunno what I mean. The lines and the interiors of the cars mentioned thus far are more...Uhh...
****! You know what I mean! Not saying I need to turn over the keys for a Camry or something, but there's something...ahh **** it. Who am I kidding, I'll never be a "grown up". If I could afford it, Id totally buy an STI or an EVO which has just as much perceived "rice" qualities as the IRL in society's eyes. I dunno why I want something new? I guess there's no real reason, I just do.
Besides, the kids are all driving the FR-Ss, not BRZs!
I guess I have a differenct perception of grown up and refined cars then. Even though they may have nicer interiors and what not, I still consider the Evos, STis, BRZs, and FR S as boy ricer cars. Hell, anymore our cars are pretty much in the same category. Not becuase of what the car is or what it looks like, but just becuase a majority of the owners are idiot kids.
If you don't want to spend the V8 cost or don't the V8 feul economy, I'd really suggest driving a manual V6 Camaro or Mustang if you haven't before. You might just change your mind. They're not slouch turd V6 cars from years back, each one is pushing 300+ HP. Either one IMO is a better all around performer compared to a BRZ or a Genesis. Plus, they have the nice features of an everyday car and still get good mileage
Because the WRX is an ugly bulbous hunk of shit. I don't have anything against sedans..... Except WRXs...... They look so........uhhhhhhhh........not good.
Thats a real simple answer for me, I could never bring myself to buy a WRX and have it not be an STI. Same as if they sold a straight turbo Lancer. It just wouldn't sit right.
Not that I truely care what anyone thinks of me (okay, we all do to some extent), but I'm gonna be fo..for..old(er) in a few months. I just feel weird in the IRL, now. In a few more years it'll look like I'm borrowing my son's car.
Well in my case gen coupe has LSD, brembo brakes, rwd, nice interior (even though I love my recaros) 3.8 sounds amazing and is probably just as fast as my car. If I don't get one of my buddy's two evos I'm going to bite the bullet and grab a 2013 3.8 track (r-spec doesn't have cruise control :/ )
@Rayne: It's a great car, I can't deny it. I was pretty much sold. In fact, had they had any color other than red, I'd probably be driving one right now. Now that I've seen the severity of these tranny problems, though, I'm not so into the idea. Make sure you read through that thread I posted on the last page. Yeah, probably 50 of those pages are from the same 5 posters replies, but it's still a significant issue you may wanna be forewarned about before jumping in. You don't need your new car in the shop every few months for a tranny swap.
Ah, thanks GMR. I just got back from the local Credit Union, actually. They offered me 2.71, which for my credit score is pretty damn great. I was expecting 4. something
So let's just say an 06 IRL in VG condition w/ 81K KBBs for $6.8K Trade-In Value. How much money would you pay (AKA lose) not to have to deal with 50 Ricer kids from Craigslist calling your house every day to come and drive your car while you grit your teeth and then leave without actually buying it?
Personally, not having to deal with people in that capacity is worth $1,000 to me. Suburu, however, are only offering me $5,100.
What's the least you'd take? What are our cars actually selling for out there private party wise? does anyone even want/care about them?
Edit: Sheesh. Judging from past ebay activity, I may wanna jump on that! Still, throw in Stage 2, Mounts, t-bars, rear sway, and Comp package. That's makes the pill extra biter to swallow. Wish I could just keep the IRL and put more down on the car, but I cant really afford to keep, no do I have space for 3 vehicles.
My policy for craigslist would be cash in hand or no rides and you break it, you bought it.
But, yes, $1000 is in the ballpark difference between private sale and trade in.
My experience is that a car with over 50,000 miles on it is always rated around KBB fair or poor and any money added to make it appear as if it was more is taken from the profit margin in the new car. It's a shell game, really...and my experience comes from 2 years as a car salesman at two dealers.
If you traded it in for $5,100, the next day you would run into someone and they will tell you "I would have paid you $5,500!" But, is it worth the hassle for a few hundred bucks? Then one day that person is going to call you up and say "Hey, the is (insert one of the many common small problems have) what do you think it is?"
Once you sign the paper work the dealership will leave you alone!
Ah, so the 6700 I'm seeing in KBB isn't even applicable at a dealer?! They are looking at "poor" which happens to be $5500. So in reality, they are pretty close to the mark. Interesting. Well, he told me he'd "...try to get you a few more dollars and call you tomorrow." If he can come a bit closer, I'll strongly consider it.
The AC needs a recharge, it's totally out of alignment, and the roof leaks 2 times a year, so I guess I'm playing the same game they are.
If worse comes to worse, I'll ask then to take off their $700 rear diffuser and save some cash that way. I'm not really a fan of it, anyway.
You're right. In all honesty, a TRUE "grown up" car is out of my price range.
Ultimately, regardless of what demographic a car is aimed at, it doesn't really mean shit. I've seen a 60 yr old driving am STI and he looked cool as hell doing it, too. In the end, it's all about enjoying your car and having fun. I don't really do that in the IRL anymore. I barely go over 5psi. Other than occasionally punching it in order to pull out into a busy road or launching it from a light to see how much distance i can put between the other cars, it might as well be a QC. I think I'm just attached to it by the sheer fact of how unique it is and how much of a sleeper it will always be. I do live the car, I just don't live driving it anymore.
The BRZ is a blast to drive. When I get a chance to drive it without a "nanny" in the passenger seat, I can only imagine how much fun it will be....
^^^^^3800lbs but sexy and comfortable. Pretty slow though because of the weight. Not exactly the best handling car either but for what op describes as his criteria its a good fit.
Ah, maybe that's just it. It's not okay. I think, if the BRZ were Turbo with 200ish whp, there would be one parked in my driveway as we speak. The only reason I'm still entertaining the idea is because in some ways, that extra power doesn't seem needed here. Some might say it would defeat the point of the whole thing. Most of me wants to think it's perfect the way it stands. There's just that whole "numbers" thing my mind can't let go of. I'm sure a lot of potential customers of the BRZ feel/felt the same.
We'll see. I'll make up my mind the next couple of days. I'll either chicken out or be posting pics of the new ride...
After changing my mind 100 times over, I finally made a decision. Truth be told, I'm still not confident I made the correct one. Don't get me wrong, car drives like a dream. It's super tight, responsive, and sexy as hell, but I'm just not able to wrap my head around the short gearing and the overall lack of balls, just yet.
It seems like I'm shifting into 3rd @ 25, 4th @ 35, and cruising at 40ish in 5th for ****'s sake. Sure, I'm still in "break-in" and haven't really taken it above 4K rpm, but I'm not so sure dancing closer to redline is gonna give me what I'm looking for. I know I'll never get that kick I'm used to from a boosted car, so maybe it's not so much the lack of power, but the transition from FI to NA that's the issue, but chances it's a bit of both, and I may have made the wrong choice afterall.
It would probably help having driven FR more. Maybe the lack of straight line power could be replaced with throwing myself full on into some twisties, but the RWD freaks me out a little bit. I'm totally not used to that shit yet. I'll have to get a job delivering tofu, maybe...
Anyway, it is what it is, I guess. The IRL will go to a new home and I'll just have to make due until the new Supra comes out.

Hate to say it, but if you were not 100% confident and can say without a doubt you are happy with the car, you should not have bought it. Its probably the fact that it is new, and that you just aren't not fully adjusted to it yet. If you still don't like it, most dealers have a few days that you can return the car. If you go that route, I suggest getting something with a V8 and RWD
No doubt. There already is a decent foundation. That doesn't mean my dumb ass will be able to take advantage of it, though. I'm of the frame of mind that if you don't know how to install it yourself/fix it if it breaks, you probably shouldn't have it to begin with. I can do brakes, suspension, and stupid shit here and there, but I have no confidence in FI kits or anything "engine" related.
I'll either get used to it, or trade it in for the inevitable STI down the road. We'll see. Like I said at the beginning of all of this, I drove the IRL like an old lady, so I obviously didn't "need" the extra power to begin with.
Still, it's nice to have a gun and not need it, then need a gun and not have it, ya know?
And if you would have invested all your money in guns instead of cars you would be a very rich man right now!
I understand what you saying.
