ECOTEC 2.4 in RL?

Does anyone know if there are plans to upgrade the red line to the more powerfull 2.4L ECOTEC engine or if that is even possible in a red line? From what I read on the GM site the 2.4L give between 165 to 177 base HP. That would be a sweet base engine in the Red Line.

I was going to say that they have different compression ratios, but the 2.4's is 9.8 wheras ours is 9.5, so that is close enough.

You won't see as high boost numbers with that, due to the higher displacement. But the added displacement means that the torque would be noticablely higher then the hp.

The 2.4 also has the VVT system, I am not sure how that would respond to the boost. And it would make it more dificult to swap out the cams.

But, the block should be a drop in.

Actually, the only real differences between the 2.4L VVT and the LSJ are the stroke and VVT. You should be able to drop in the 2.4L, throw on the LSJ manifolds and such and you should be able to just start her up and go. Or if you just want the displacement, you could just get hold of a crank out of a 2.4L and just drop that in the 2.0 and you should be good.

Yeah I'd rather have the crank and aftermarket rods from it then the engine itself. Then if you wanted to go crazy you could bore the engine out and increase the displacement that way.

So you are saying that the bore is the same?
How is that possible that the stroke is different if the bore and compression is the same?

Maybe if you took the whole lower end of the 2.4, and put the top end of an LSJ you could have a 2.4 without the VVT. Plus if you kept the top end of your LSJ, you would retain the different cams and springs.

Yes the Bore is the same. On the 2.0L 2.2L and 2.4L all have the same bore.

My version of a stout Ecotec would be a 2.4L crank, Aftermarket 2.4L Rods, and larger aftermarket pistons for a bored out block. I believe you can pick up .1-.2L of displacement from the changed bore. Making Potentially a 2.6L displacement LSJ.

ok people... first off you don't need to do an engine swap to get a 2.4 ecotec in your car.. you only need the 2.4 head and the crank... after that it's identical.. but... the bolt pattern on the head of the 2.4 as opposed to the head on the 2.0 is different which means you can't swap the manifolds... you would need a custom one which would mean you would need to find someone who would want to make one which will include our cores and all the needed plumming... not an easy fab job...

SMS actually has 2.5L performance engine setups. They started with a 2.2L and bored it to 2.5L, so they picked up .3L just by boring alone. If you got the 2.4L crank and bore it that much, you can have a 2.7L LSJ. That's just nuts, not sure how well the cylinder walls are gonna hold up and how the engines going to react to that much more sideloading on the pistons.

The Red Line and Ion is getting killed of after this year, so GM isn't going to do anything special. It's sad since it would have got 2.0 turbo if it made it to 07.
