Navigation System

Anyone have any thoughts or know of any good navigation systems? That's one thing I haven't followed whatsoever, so need to do a quick beginniner's course to it myself. Any good names? Any good products? Under a $1000 pricetag, and something simple and not flashy... don't want to invite people to break into my car or anything.

From what I remember reading you can hook up your laptop in your car and you can use that as an effective GPS. But I would think that would require paying for a monthly satellite internet fee? that'd get too expensive for my tastes. (Back when I was considering satellite, it was like 50+ bucks a month, has it changed at all?). Thanks to anyone who chimes in

The only one that I know of well is the Garmin Street Pilot. I beleive they retail for around 900. It's portable, and is powered by the accessory plug.

Go with the Pioneer AVIC touch screen. Its got cd/mp3/dvd/xm/NAV/and traffic plus its can also be hooked up to a back up camera. My pops has one on his H2 and he loves it! I think they run around $1,500 to $2,000

You can find the Pioneer D1 and the Eclipse Navi unit brand new for about $1,000 or lower on eBay brand new. Never buy head units from stereo shops or online stereo shops, you'll get ripped off

yup, ebay's definitely the way to go with all that stuff, granted you dont' get quite the same warranty, but i still prefer to save a few hundred :P

I've been using a Navman icn520 for about a year now. I love the thing. Very small compared to other units (size of a PDA), high rez touch screen, 3d maps, voice turn-by-turn etc... all for around $400. Check out www.newegg.com.

Edit:

WOW check this deal out!

I am pretty sure that is the Navman unit repackaged in a slightly different housing and rebranded as a MIO

thanks for the spinoff but judging by the reviews, the other 'original' one is the way to go
