Is it possible to turbo/supercharge a 2004 Saturn Ion?

Hey everyone,

I've been doing some research on this topic and can't quite find a straight answer. I know the 2004 engines are not tuneable but is there a workaround method of some sort?

And if not, would it be possible to shove a redline engine in this thing?

My car is a 2.2L sedan, by the way (if the username did not make it obvious.)

Thanks.

ZZP makes a kit to do either one, *BUT* they don't show to work for an '04 2.2.

Seems as if the problem is related to lack of tuning ability.

Realistically, with Redline prices as low as they are, it'd make more sense to just buy a Redline.

HA HA

supercharged ion sedan

I had a sedan for 10 years - great car - hows the front suspension on that?

I would be worried about that if you subject it to more power..
it had trouble keeping up with 140 HP -

got to get an ion redine ..believe us

Actually, due to some front end damage I had to rebuild my entire front-end suspension essentially - new springs, control arms, sway bar links, etc.

Either way, I was just curious if it was possible. I'm not interested in dropping 4-5k on a redline at the moment.

Thanks.

The ion redline is totally tuned for performance - total car design

looks like an ion - but not really an ion

There are some people that did it though but from what I have heard they are only picking up perhaps 20-40 HP

It's more of a "do it because it's possible" not a "do it because it makes sense" type of thing, haha. I'm aware that the redline was designed specifically for performace driving.

Edit: Apparently this guy youtube.com/watch?v=i-0jkwAJWeE pulled it off, interesting. Terrible video though. I'm not even sure I want to be associated with someone like this.

go for it if you know how

my frustrations with my old ion sometimes show up here on the forum

I would like to add that when I drove my ion sedan brand new, it was kinda sporty

and even got it up to about 105 mph

Oh, I understand that. I just dropped $3800 on a turbo swap for a car that's worth about $3800...

You could do it with a standalone, but then anything BCM related wouldn't work.

I suppose you could engine/trans swap and swap the PCM as well, but then you'd run into the BCM issue again.

What I'm saying is, it'd be a lot less trouble and about the same amount of money to just buy a Redline to begin with.

I suppose it all depends on how much you value your time and effort.

I could have built my own turbo swap for ~$2900, but would have had to take time finding and building things. That extra $900 was worth it to me to have ZZP go through the effort and ship a no-headache kit to my door...

There have been a few sedan builds on here, but I'm not sure if they were with an 04. IonNinja is the one that comes to mind. Here are some of his build threads.

Don't think the year ever mattered but I think it was always zzp didn't tune a supercharger for the 2.2. I think it was always possible you just had to find your own tune.

You can turbo/supercharge anything as long as ya can tune. I have a supercharger on my 5.9cc rc truck.
