I cried a little inside :(

There's actually a hell of a story behind who I consider to be the 'true' driver. One that will make the average person a little pissed off, I know it did to me.

But there goes one of the 400 enzos ever built, gone

Well originally I had heard 200 myself.... I honestly think 125 was a significantly downplayed number... even at a 125 I don't think the engine would be hundreds of yards away... and if you're racing the mclaren mercedes, a 125 would go by in a blink, he had to have been going faster than that if he was racing...

"The crash did not result in serious injuries. But it sent shockwaves through both the tabloid and exotic car worlds as one group wondered whether the driver was a celebrity and the other mourned the loss of a hand-built car revered by many as a work of art."

"He destroyed one of the finest cars on Earth, maybe the finest. It's like taking a Van Gogh painting and burning it."

That's exactly what I'm thinking about every time I see something like this. Who was driving this? And I shed a tear for there being 1 less rarity in the world. I bet you Ferrari isn't gonna offer this guy to buy any more of their precious cars. Since they only offer these cars to people on their special list.

And is anyone else surprised that the Enzo has airbags? For some reason, it's just hard seeing airbags in this race car. Race cars normally don't have airbags, right? I know this is a 'domesticized' race car, and they need it to protect their stupid rich drivers, but it just seems odd and a bit of extra weight to put airbags in these...

Edit: Haha the last line is great. "If their race theory is correct, it won't be the first time a Mercedes beat a Ferrari." That's a real low blow to Ferrari.

The problem with toying around on public roads with cars like these, it's going to be pretty hard to hide later, whether you crash it, or just get reported for doing something stupid. There are only a handful of owners of the Enzos, or SLRs that police have to sort through and easily find who was involved. And I doubt this is the same Eriksson that races Ferraris in Europe (I don't know who he is), but why would he be here in the US, with that car, when he can be in Europe on much better roads?

I think the Enzo has to have airbags in this country....

I'm not sure that it's such a downplayed number either, 125 mph, hitting a pole, could easily make the engine travel that far. Plus, doing 125 on public streets in a car like that is probably harder than in one like ours. The suspension and chassis on that car is so tuned for the track, that one little bump sends you flying into a pole.

good point about the bump thing... didn't think about that, but that just seems like such a mild speed for a car like that... i mean hell it's like a bike, and hitting 125 on a bike is a pretty easy thing to do. but I guess a bump could make you go flying.

The article I read said that he hit the pole 5' off the ground, and we know the car isn't that high... I'm not sure that's what occured though.

When I raced the S2K the other day, mashing the brakes at 130 was a little eye-opening. You could feel the car shudder and squirm over the uneven road. I'm doing 100 at the track when I hit the brakes harder than that, and th car stays rock solid. On the highway, I had to hold on with both hands and adjust constantly.

yup... you don't want to make drastic movements at that speed on ANYTHING, no matter how race bred it is. race cars don't make drastic movements either ;p

Im sure they'll build him another one if he wants it. Hell Ferrari did select him to be able to buy one so why not build him another?
