Is the end near?

Well Ford is going to lay-off 70k factory workers and 10k white collar workers. The industry in a whole is not very healthy. I keep getting this feeling that Saturn may be on the chopping block like Oldsmobile within the next few years. Any thoughts on this?

Kinda sucks car companies gotta go through this. Seems like they're always closing factories and whatnot.

What really hurts the domestic brands is alot of the stuff they were putting out throughout the 80s and 90s was really poor quality IMO, (and for the most part the majority of people's opinions too). Now alot of people have it stuck in their minds that the Japs build higher quality cars, and that's just the way it is, and will always be that way. People don't realize that American cars have greatly improved, and Japanese cars aren't as good as they used to be, now that they aren't as much of a basic/simple efficient design anymore. The more stuff they add to go wrong, the more problems they have, just like every other car. It's very hard to change peoples way of thinking, and they pass it down to their children. I know because I used to think that way, and it took me seeing my friends getting 200K+ trouble free miles out of their domestic cars to convince me to give them a chance.

That probably just means they're cutting more corners & charging more money. big buisness is not worried about doing quality work, they're just worrying about how fast they can get rich & spending the least amount of money getting there. The world really makes me sick nowadays. They charge sooo much money for a car nowadays and they aren't made half as good as the cars 30 years ago. Do you think the redline or most other cars after the 70's will be around in 30 years like the t-bucket or a 1949 chevy buisness coupe. It's because I think they acually make cars today to NOT last as long so everybody can make their money on them. With the technolegy today you don't think they can make a car a lot more trouble free, sure they can but, where's the money to be made in doing that. The rich keep getting richer a most other people have to keep struggling just to get by. Hank jr said it best 20 years ago "the man keeps telling me to ride the bus & turn down my thermastat while their all ridin' around in jets & cadillacs, we can't take this lying down we gotta try and fight back, till THEY believe what they're sayin.

GM is dumping a crapload of money into Saturn over the next several years, with the Sky, Aura, redesigned Vue, Astra/Ion/whatever it will be called, and the Outlook. I see Buick or Pontiac as being much more vunerable, preferably Buick, but really I don't think any of them will get cut. Either the GM as we know it now will die as a whole, or it will resurge and produce vehicles that are on par quality, style, and performance wise with the competition.

Yea, there is a lot of talk around here that buick will be offed before anything else, possibly followed by pontiac. Not that it will happen, just that will be the order if it does happen
