Hardwiring a 12V power splitter Hardwiring a 12V power splitter
ESV0720
11-03-2007

Here's how I wired up my 12V splitter. Sorry, no pictures, if you have questions, PM me and I'll answer them (I'll try to get pictures asap) I used a Radioshack 3 outlet car power adapter (http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=family)

tools and equipment:
1 Power splitter kit
1 Drill with a phillips point, flat head, (or actuall drill tip, but you'll determine that later)
1 roll Electrical tape
1 knife
2 wire nuts (or "rat rubbers" as my dad calls them)
1 piece of 4 inch wire about the same gauge as what you're installing
1 electrical meter
1 sheet metal screw -OR- 1 bolt, nut, and washer to fit
1 ounce of patience

1. pull up on the part of the console closest to the dash, the part with cupholders and the shifter. It is a bit difficult, but it just snaps in place, so give it a good pull. The shifter boot DOES NOT have to come off. you can if you want, but I managed to do it without

2. Disconnect the wires that go to the 12V power outlet. Should be an orange and a black wire with electrical tape around it.

3. Cut the tape and seperate the wires. Follow the wires down to the big bundle of wires, and snip the next one or two pieces of tape that are there.

4. Take electrical tape and wrap the other wires back up, sans the ones you cut out (hopefully still the orange and black, right)

5. Alright. You should have roughly 6-7 inches of wire. Here's where it gets a little bit tricky. The orange wire (the "hot wire") is just a bit to small for the tap that comes with the kit. What I did was cut the orange wire, and splice in a small piece or larger diameter wire (about the same gauge as the wire from the kit) using two wire nuts.

6. Once you have the wire spliced, you can connect the hot wire and the wire for the outlet, following the instructions on the outside of the package.

7. Now that thats done, take the black wire (not from the car, from the kit) and snake that up past the shifter towards the dash. Pry off the panel down by your passengers' feet (the oposite from the fuse panel) and take a sheet metal screw and screw the wire to the metal cross member behind that.

7a. you could also find a small nut, washer, and bolt, drill a hole into that metal piece, and bolt it in, but i didnt have one available

8. Now that thats connected, you should have the hot wire connected and the black wire connected. Pull out your meter, and do a test. Take off the inline fuse, and test the positive from there and the negative from the metal piece you hooked up. If you get about +12, you're good.

9. run the wire up behind the shifter, and you should see a empty spot in the back. Coil up the wire and use a wire tie to hold it all in.

*****From here you can mount it any way you want. I'm just going to tell you how I did it and where I personally thought it would work best.*****

10. Take the outlet, where you plug everything in, and mount it using the double sided tape to the lower part of the console, right in far enough in front of your seat so that you can still move it without problems, and far enough down so that you don't have problems with plugs being to tall or whatever. Use the provided screws to make the mount permanent.

11. Run that wire underneath the lower part of the console. It just lifts up slightly so you can run the wire in.

12. Run the plug end of the wire back up the drivers side of the console and plug it into the outlets.

13. Do another check of your power. Make sure you still get about +12V. If you get -12V, you did something wrong. or you're just connecting the wires to the wrong places.

14. Clean up. Make sure your wires are secure, where you cut the tape is wrapped back up, and nothing is in the shifter linkage.

15. Plug the original outlet (the black and orange wires) back into the stock outlet

16. Snap the cover back down on the console and put the panel back in and secure it

17. TEST IT! plug in whatever you got and see if it works. The fuse is rated at 15A, so you should be good, just take it easy and check the power req.

IMPORTANT! make sure you put the fuse back in. I didnt, and got everything put back together, do discover that it didnt work. After checking the connections, I found that the fuse was still sitting on the dash.

Hope this is helpful to anyone doing this. Again, if you have questions, PM me or drop a line here and I'll get back

-Eric

If you mount it on the passenger side, make sure the chair has full range of motion, and that its out of the way of the glove box. I think it should go just below the curve for the cup holder, but that means its also going to go really close to the floor.

Also, I didnt think until just now, but what if you hacked into the piece of plastic directly behind the cupholders, where its all blank and crap. Idunno if there's space, but it could work there as well if there is...
