How To: Cheap Oil Catch Can How To: Cheap Oil Catch Can

OK this how-to was originally posted by an0malous on the shortbus but there are some who don't go over there and that is why I did one for here!

this will help keep oil form your valve/cam cover breather out of your intake b/c as you can see, they connect (my tube was oily)!

Tools Needed:
-Some hose clamps 1/4" to 1/2" size (the size to fit the hose, <$1)
-(2) 3/8" barbed hose fittings with 1/4" thread to match filter product outputs ($3)
-Flat head screw driver
-Razor blade to cut hose
-The filter element/catch can-This I bought at my local home depot ($11), made by Husky, it runs in an air compressor line to filter out dirt and fluids, with (2) 1/4" ports, one on each side.

I did this with the k&n intake on, so the hose was already split already below the pcm. you can add this filter anywhere along the line where you may like it. it fit easiest for me here.

Now that you have all the materials, start by disconnecting the hose which runs from the rear of valve/cam cover to the intake tube from the intake tube.

With this hose unattached, take the catch can and screw in the 2 barbed fittings on each side. You may want to use pipe tape to prevent leakage.

Now, well how I did it was I found the place where i wanted the can to sit, and since it was so close to the bend in the hose near the intake, i cut the bend in the hose off, and attached it to one of the filter element's barbed fitting.

**KEEP IN MIND THE FILTER ELEMENT WORKS DIRECTIONALLY MEANING THE FLOW IS MEANT TO GO IN ONE DIRECTION ACCORDING TO THE ARROW ON TOP**

so with the bend in the hose attached w/ a hose clamp

now, place the other end of the hose coming from the valve/cam cover on the other barbed fitting on the other side of the catch can.

with this in, secure down the hose clamps at each location to make ensure there is no leakage.

at the bottom of the filter element, there is a drain mechanism. make sure this is closed until you drain it.

Now, that everything is back together, secure down the filter wherever in the engine bay you put it. drain when full.

This is what mine looked like completed.

Nice write up. I didn't even think about using an air compressor filter. Very Nice indeed!

I've thought about doing that but you have to check it often. But it is better then nothing.

I installed the same filter on Saturday and drove about 200 miles on Sunday. I didn't see any oil either. Do you think that you need to remove the filter?

Yesterday I completely took off the filter, and looked all inside of it. there was a bit of oil dripping down the side of the clear part, but almost nothing.

I've seen it done on some SRT-4's and they had to check them every week or 2.

Maybe i'll have to do this with my next trip to home depot.
