I changed my oil for the first time on Sunday and it was actually easier and less messy than changing out a "normal" oil filter. There was an error in the sticky, though. It's a 23mm not 32mm (1 1/4") and I think an 8" or 10" extension works best so you make sure the rachet clears the vacuum hoses and components. Also, if you pop the cap off the filter, it is easier to maneuver the filter out. All in all, it was much easier than I thought. No more $100 oil changes at Saturn!

when you have the car jacked up, does all the oil come out? or does some stay in there (miniscual i know) because of the angle the car is up at?

If anything the angle would assist in more oil coming out. It's kinda a given that you aren't going to be able to get all of the oil out. Again its nice that the oil filter is on the top of the engine because you don't have the mess of taking a traditional filter off and having oil drip everywhere.

follow this how to, it is very accurate and will save you lots of $$$$. Oh yea and my oil filter cap is definately 1 1/4" or 32mm. I used a 6" extension and it worked fine. I did'nt unplug any wires though, I just put the socket on the cap by hand then slid the extension through the wires. Everything cost me about $50: just incase anyone out there doesn't know our cars run Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 oil(need 7 quarts) and our fram oil filter is CH9018.

There are more ways to do it than one; I tried about three different ways from going over top through the wires from the side and under the sc. The best that worked for me was first unscrewing the two bolts that are holding the anti freeze in place believe it was a 10 mm socket. Then I used a 32mm socket with a 1/2 drive, no extention and turned it a couple of times and off it came. I disconnected the filter from the cap and replaced the fliter and pushed it back on the cap and did everything in reverse order.

A very nice guide, I'm glad it was posted, saved me a lot of time and money (and a lot more in the future, I'm sure).
I second the comments and specs by IonRL. That's what I did and it was a 20 minute process. The only thing I would recommend is to make sure you get a large enough drain pan; I got a generic 7 quart one from WalMart and it barely fit all the oil, haha. |

Soo to add to this just changed my oil 800 miles before 5k. So ya its deff a 32mm filter and its alot easier to take the bolts off to the coolant filler neck. 15mm drain plug. Also its roughly 6.4 qts so u can just get 7qts and use the other next time so u dont need to buy an aditional qt. I also used a qt of Lucas oil stuff help keep the engine clean and stuff. Car ran like a baby on start up and idle was so quiet. Deff reccomend that stuff. Says use it every oil change only $13 at carquest so i spent $40 on 7qts of mobile 1, $4 filter got the saturn hook up and then $13 for the lucas. Once u get it down it should be easy hella oil comes out so be ready to fill up ur drain buckets.
