SPC Rally '05 + Dyno + 1/4 mile times

Well the Saturn Performance Club (www.saturnperformanceclub.com) 2005 Rally has come and gone, and it was a blast. I would have liked to see more RL owners, considering what our car's built to do... but there's always next year (HINT HINT =). Where else can you get in dyno runs, a lapping day at an awesome track, and 20+ runs at the dragstrip, all in three days?

That, along with Chris and Ryan from GM's High Performance Vehicle Operations and the SCCA race days made for a supremely entertaining week! The info Chris and Ryan had on the RL was truly amazing... I guess that's what comes from being on the team that developed the car and ran it on the Nurburgring. They had some incredible (and scary) stories of incidents on that circuit.

I was able to get in 16 runs myself, with a best of 14.514 @ 96.14MPH. Since this was only my 2nd time racing the car I know I can do at least a bit better. Dyno came out to 232.0HP / 197.6TQ -- K&N filter, 3rd gear runs, Dynojet dyno. This is a huge improvement over the stock dyno of 216.8HP/194.3TQ, but it is a different dyno. Don't worry, I'll get another run on the local dyno before other parts are added. Video of the dyno run can be seen HERE. Thanks to Lane for filming and encoding! Check out his writeup of the '05 Rally at www.evilplastic.com.

Congrats on the excellent run! You probably should stick to the same dyno when evaluating for sure. The Dynojet can read substantially different than other technology and in the end it's not the actual numbers which are important but the changes from modifications which make your car go like you want it to. Vishnu tells me that their Dyno Dynamic Dynojet reads reads 30 hp less on their modified STi than a Dynojet. Who really knows which is absolutely correct. I read that Harmon Motive tested a stock Sti for Motor Trend Magazines shootout between the Evo and STi and its dyno figure was 233 whp and the factory says 300 at the flywheel. I can't believe that there would be 67hp lost to parasitic with the drive train so the bottom line is that you will get widely different figures from different equipment.

Your run speeds when translated by formula to horsepower, etc., indicate substantial improvements over stock so if you use the same dyno for subsequent modifications at least you will have a base from which to calculate improvements.

Best regards,

Lin
