PCM updates?

Went to my dealership for an oil change and figured while I was there I would inquire about the update regarding CEL's with aftermarket intakes. The service manager said that they could check and if there was one that they could flash it on there but it would cost me 90 somethin bucks. He said that they aren't covered under warranty which I found strange considering it's an update to the stock tune. Is that what everyone else has encountered at their dealerships? I just decided to wait for now.

I think the charge is for labor. Warranty labor generally isn't free [our company still charges labor, garage door company's do, electrician's generally do, etc] with some exceptions.

The part[s] are warrantied so they are free of charge but the labor isn't warrantied for anything, it's just someone putting those part[s] in.

If you are stock or GM stage II, if there is a update AND you bring it in for something covered in the updated code, then it is a warranty repair and covered under the new vehicle warranty. If you bring it in for something not related to the specific update and want it anyway, you pay......

I am stock with the exception of the K&N. The original purpose of the visit was for an oil change, just thought I'd ask about the update while I was there. So I need to specify before hand that I'm getting CEL's and then the update should be covered correct?

If the CEL (DTC) is specifically one of the reasons for the update, yep.....

he probably is charging you for it because the K&N intake is aftermarket and GM might have come up with a fix for it just because of so many complaints from people. so they use thier fix as a way to stop complaints of the aftermarket intake throwing codes. its also a way to make a little money off from it. thier thing is if the problem is directly related to a stock component then warranty covers it. if its not (IN YOUR CASE) and they can fix it (which they can in this instance) then they will but, you pay out of pocket. so in this case saturn isnt trying to rip you off but I personally still stand by my statement(s) below.

Wow what a supprise saturn told you that. I dont believe you saturn would never say something like that just to get a buck out of you. you cant be telling the truth.

I dont think ill ever go back to saturn again. anyone of them not for service anyway. not even if im paying for it.

He had no complaint other than "Are there any updates for the PCM?" That does not fall under the complaints in any TSB. Regardless, after so many people have talked about this and that regarding warranty, how can this be a suprise to anyone? What y'all are asking is why Saturn would not warranty a PCM update to fix a problem directly caused by an aftermarket problem.

Your best bet would be to read the TSB for the specific concerns that it will address. If it is for a specific DTC code it will be difficult for you unless it's thoring that exact code all the time. I doubt GM would design a computer program to fix something caused by an aftermarket part. Why spend the money in R&D for a failure that is not caused by something they designed?

Actually, the only thing that I remember was the TSB that stated problems with the MAF and an aftermarket intake would not be covered warranty. I doubt they would go back aganist that.

Thank you for the responses guys. I guess I put out the wrong vibe in my first post. I was not at all complaining, nor do I blame Saturn/GM for not covering this under warranty. I was just curious about how other dealerships have responded to similar situations.
Haven't decided if I'm going to keep the car yet but if I do I'll just wait until I stage it to have the problem fixed. Thanks again.
