how much power do we need?

I know that having 400 or 500 wheel horsepower would be absolutely amazing and I don't think there is anyone out there who could or would complain. But is it honestly all that necessary? Yes I know many of you are looking to build yourself a drag/track car, and in that case the more power the better. But for the 95% of us who want a streetworthy car, is 400+WHP even PRACTICALLY streetable in the redline? I had a hair over 425 to the wheels in my TT Z which weighed around 3500 lbs w/out driver and that was pushing the lines of too much power. Granted I had the 8.5 inch stock size tires on it, the thing had traction issues in nearly every gear. I don't know, I guess I may be crazy but I am going to settle with the 280-300 WHP everyone is at or nearing with 60lb'ers, 2.6, HP tuners, and few other bolt-ons. Maybe further on down the road 320-330WHP would be nice as long as its proven to not need internal work.

Yeah, I'd LOVE to hang with a moderately built Camaro SS in my $18k Saturn, with about $3k into it.

One may then ask, is it necessary to have a car at all? No, but its a hell of alot more fun! As for YOUR question. I'm prolly gonna shoot for around 275-ish, at least thats what my current plan is calling for. I'm looking for more road course/auto-x, than straight line though too. I'd have to have the chassis/suspension near perfect before I'd look into more power. So really I'll be dipping into the 60lb-ers w/ intake, full exhaust and of course an HPT tune. Nothing too crazy.

My personal goal is 300whp-ish. After than I would definately have to work on supporting mods to put it all down to the ground. But to some, 400whp is a goal.

Personally , I can totally see your point. I'm actually pretty happy with the power I have (for now)... If I wanted a strip car, I could build one for much less than this car costed, and it would be way faster in the 1/4 mile than 99% of any front wheel drive cars could ever be. To me, this car is just a sports car, and my reliable transportation. It's a very fun car, and I'm happy with that. If I go to the strip, it's just for fun. I agree that this is a much better road course car than drag race car. It's quicker than the majority of all other cars on the road, and sells for probably below the average cost of a new car. Yeah, I can see myself adding a few more things like a smaller pulley, some tuning, and maybe water injection, but I can't see myself striving to push this car over the 300 whp mark, it's pointless when you can't really get the power to the ground.
