Why does it say that they recommend unleaded regular gas? I thought it needed 90+ octane, right?

the 2.4 is different than the 2.2 in more ways than just displacement. it gets most of the upgrades from our engine (from what i've read) including the piston cooling oil jets, but the main thing is VVT (variable valve technology) which keeps the down low torque, and gains HP up top, while getting good fuel economy

When I first got my car I had flames and chunks of ceramic from the cat blowing out of the tailpipe. They tried to say that it was caused my using regular gas. Dealerships are full of morons. First of all that's not possible, if anything it would be the other way around. Second, I use BP 93 every time.

The manual says 91... clear as day... it also says that you can run 87 with reduced performance... READ THE MANUAL...

I remember seeing that in the manual. In fact, I had to inform the salesforce not to put 87 in there. So why does it say in the engine specs to use 87? Any guesses?

It is an old flyer, for one, plus you CAN use 87 in it. That's the REQUIRED octane level for the car. In days of heightened gas price concerns, I can see not advertising that best performance requires the expensive gas...

The spec is usually a MINIMUM fuel specification
The LSJ can and does run OK on 87 octane
You wont hurt anything because it has a knock sensor that will pull timing out if it detects detonation under boost. This will not hurt anything , you just wont get as much power or economy if it has retarded the timing.
