anyone who has a remote start on thier redline

BE CAREFUL. i have seen with my own eyes things from saturn to the dealerships that stated if the car has a remote start on it they can deny a lot of specific warranty claims. gm claims that having a remote start on these cars will mess up the ecu, and possibly cause unrepairable damage. i have put many remote starts on ions before and they are not that hard and work fine. i told the service manager that I KNOW VERY WELL that i was going to put one on mine and he showed me all this stuff. they techs even said when they went to the traing school for the redline they were instructed the same thing about these. so if you guys have one dont ever give them the remote. if they see the flashing light tell em its an alarm. worst case is they pull the bottom of the dash and see but most wolnt do that. also you should put the system in valet mode so they cant use it to see what it does and again dont give them the remote. just a word of caution

In Michigan it is illegal to have a remote start on a manual. Most places will do it anyways

I had my remote start/alarm combo installed at saturn, so boo hoo for them if it screws up...lol. I do love the window sticker though "STOP! Secruity System Installed By Saturn of Regina"

Yeahhhh, I've heard remote starts were dangerous to have on manual transmission cars; people leaving them in gear, with the parking brake off (because that's how they learned to park a stick) and hitting the remote start and jumping it into another car/a building/over a curb. And I did think it was illegal in Michigan.

Haha, speaking of that. Someone I know started their manual car while in a movie theatre and the parking brake failed (woo for tegs..lol) and it drove around in gear and hit things. Oh, but most new ones require a sequence for it be in "ready" mode to start it. Like mine goes, doors shut, engine idling (plus wheels must be stationary), in nuetral, clutch let out, parking brake on, than I hit my arm button, pull my key, leave my car and arm my car. Long and stupid but hey, I like not being able to start my car unless I want to (plus since I use my remote to lock my car, the keys won't be locked in the car....unless I am too).

Whoa!
Easy there on the mass hysteria Z-man!

Actually the best course of action if you are bringing you car in WITH an electrical problem of some sort and you have any aftermarket electronics (alarm, remote start, amplifiers,HID ballasts, alky pumps, boostApump, etc etc) is:
1. Pull the fuses from the equipment and confirm you STILL have the problem
2. Disclose that you have an aftermarket system installed when you drop the car off and that you have pulled the fuses to a) confirm it's not the cause B) insure it wont interfere with the diagnosis
*If fuses, wiring or modules are hidden somewhere describe location (otherwise they can charge you "straight-time" for to search them out )

IMO GM/Saturn has had pretty lenient aftermarket equipment policies for years. Most electrical diagnostic procedures call for the technician to identify and disable any aftermarket equipment- in case the equipment or sub-standard installation techniques are actually the CAUSE of the concern.

If you try to HIDE the fact that you have a remote start system, not only is it UNSAFE for the technician (trust me he would rather have the remote in his OWN pocket) but it also opens the door for them to spend a bunch or time and then discover the hidden/disguised equipment and they just might HALT diagnosis, give YOU the bill and say "bring it back after all that crap is removed"

So (as usual) your best bet is total honesty. They must respect your rights to install aftermarket equipment. But under warranty policies GM will NOT pay them to determine if these aftermarket installations are the root cause of the condition. So if you have already done that, and disabled the equipment, they can treat the vehicle as if it wasn’t there. As always though how smooth this will go will depend on the individuals involved, and the ability of the technician to remain confident that your aftermarket installation is not the root cause of the problem.
If it IS- YOU pay, plain and simple

HTH

I was driving though a small industrial area a few weeks back , when I seen a Sunfire, doing "reverse donuts" in a small field , turning up a huge cloud of dust! I decided to drive over there in case someone was in trouble- and discovered a small crowd of people watching it. Turns out the guy was a "mechanic" and had installed his own remote start system and had bypassed all of the safety systems and run timers.

Somehow he pressed the button in his pocket and because it was in reverse it backed up through 2 large parking lots (missing dozens of cars and people) hopped a curb, went through a barb wire fence, and was now happily doing reverse donuts. They were waiting for it to run outta gas, because when the guy tried to get into the car- it almost killed him. (It had about a 10 foot section of barb wire and a post hanging/ thrashing off it's front end)

I just shook my head and went and bought a Slurpee

Well mine was also installed by a person that has work with the Saturn dealership around town for years. However, when I had the camshaft position sensor seal recall +starter recall the remote starter when out of whack but luckily the person who installed fixed it no charge and it when pretty smooth since he is at least 3 times per week working on the saturn dealership + my saturn dealership assured me that anything wrong with the remote starter they sold me the would fixed as if under manufacture warranty.

just stating what the techs at 2 of the local saturn dealers said to me. they said exactly that. if you have a remote start on you ion they were told by gm that it will "ruin" the electrical system in these cars and they will not work on the car period at all. just stating what was told to me. thats all. no offense wop i dont mean to make everyone flip out again this is just what i was told. and my buddy who is a gm at the dealer said just dont tell em you have it dont bring the remote in. cause when they would not look at my car i went in to speak to him and he did get it resolved after much arguing with the techs there as they were "instructed not to touch the car" thats all sorry if it sounded the wrong way but i was told to do this by a gm.
