Post Brake Parts at Autozone

Guys: just a tip...
This weekend the rear brakes started grinding really badly on my RL. I checked them out and the driver's side rear caliper had frozen shut and ground the brake pad all the way down (no friction material left whatsoever). The rotors were really chewed up so I decided to replace them.

I went to Autozone to get the parts and bought the rotors (Duralast part #55094) and new pads. Got everything home and swapped out, but when testing the brakes, I noticed that when I braked HARD and came to a complete stop, I was getting a dull CLUNK as the car stopped. I took everything apart again and realized that the holes on the new rotor that go over the lugs onto the hub bearing were too big. When I was stopping quickly, the rotors were actually continuing to rotate about 1/4" too far and were only stopping when they actually hit the lug bolts. I checked the part numbers and saw that I was given the right parts according to Autozone's computer but that the Duracrap rotors were obviously not the right ones for the car. The RL is my only ride and I don't race, so I wasn't looking for anything fancy, so I wound up getting Raybestos rotors from Murray's instead.

Just wanted to let you all know that you shouldn't trust Autozone's computer to give you the right rotors for your rear brakes. Never had any other problems there, but there's a problem in the system that is prescribing the wrong rotos for our rear brakes.

I'm pretty sure I used those and have no problems at all. Are you sure that you tightened it up enough?

Yeah, we tightened everything up right. We measured the holes on the old rotors and on the Duralast ones. The Duralast rotor holes were more than
1/4" too big.

I have the autozones on my car as well...maybe they were packaged wrong or the clock monkey gave you the wrong ones.

I suppose there is a good chance this was an isolated incident, and that perhaps the rotors were packaged improperly, etc. I just figured I would send the heads-up anyway so you all would know to look out for a discrepancy, just in case.

BTW, the wheels were on quite tight. We have an air compressor and impact wrench.

Have you ever heard of a torque wrench?

Sorry.... I just had to say that. You really should use a torque wrench not an air impact.

Using an impact wrench on wheel lugs can mess up the rotors.

I guess when I said impact wrench I just meant air gun.
