Talking x The.Real.Redline: Build Thread x

Warning this is a bit of a read
Hey everyone,
Now I know some of you might be thinking: "Hey didnt this guy have a part out thread? " and " I thought he was buying a Mazdaspeed3? ". The answer to both questions are Yes... However as we all know shit happens and things change. Long story short I sold most of my mods for money to pay bills at first but then I had a turn around, got a better job, got rid of some debt, and that led me to want the MS3. Truth be told I may have bought the MS3 if i had not found out that Future shop had been ruining my credit for the last 6 months. That being a month long headache in its self. But i finally got my credit fixed and my finacial life back on track. By this time though i had lost all will to want and go through buying a new car. I was really unhappy with the redline for pretty much the whole winter season. Problem after problem and it all just built up. So i told my self "Well just drive the redline for a bit longer and wait untill you find a great deal....ect." So i let things settle down and was just going to take it easy for a while... Or so i thought. About two weeks ago now i was rear ended in an intersection by a big truck, Nothing huge, about $1500 worth of damage, but it was enough to kind of push me over the edge...
So i sat down and let everything soak in. As i sat, I began to think, "What if the Redline could be the car i want?". It didnt take much to get thinking like i did back when i bought the Redline; i was 18 at the time, Being 20 now alot of things have changed. One of the biggest things that has changed is experience and knowledge.
That really brings things up to speed, now it's time to get down to business.

Ill be posting pictures as I go and ill keep everything in chronological order!

April 1st-
My year Redline is a 2004, So naturally there was a bit a wear and tare on the body of the car, scratchs here and there, front bumper pepperd and chipped by rocks, rockers dulled and faded from tires kicking up anything and everything. So if they were going to be fixing the trunk and rear bumper... Why not go all out and get everything else done. Repaint the front bumper (fill in the front mount plate holes), Repaint the side skirts, and at the last minute i decided.... Wingless!!! I also found a great deal on a carbon fiber hood which i will be picking up this week!!!! *I did get the car back today. It was in the shop for a grand total of three days... Let me tell you, It looks like a new car!!

April 3rd-
Im trying to make the decision of what to start with first as this is going to be a two month ordeal. I know for sure im picking up my CF hood this comming week so that kind of makes me want to do the visual stuff first. And maybe just do the supporting mods first too ( CAI, Shifter, Header...ect.) I dont want to over load myself and ruine my plans so i've been setting budgets for my self to make sure things go smoothly. I do have pictures from a mini shoot i took when i got the car that im posting up today!

No more Low Pro spoiler! No more Scratched up bumper or trunk! -

No more rock chip's! No more front mount plate holes! -

April 4th-
I picked up a CTI 2.5" OVA today and now am just looking for a good muffler that will give a deep low rumble the isnt to loud.
Pic from CTI site:

April 6th-
I orderd some new bolts for my subframe brace and a strut tower bar from Coppertop today! The batch hes making should be done by Friday or monday
These bars look awesome!

__________________________________________________ _______________

This triggerd a whole slue of things i want to do. So the three days my car was in the shop i spent gathering a detailed list of my plans. All those things i had thought about and said "oh ill just start saving and get it done next summer....and next summer "...ect. Well NO more waiting! Instead of buying a new car im going to make the Redline everything it is supposed to be. It looks like you have done your homework.

As far as headers go...

I think the best/least expenisive header I have found is the Cobalt Addition V2 short header. It has 1.7" primaries with a very large 3" oulet. It claims to be equal lenght but I don't think it is. I have had it in my hands and the outside runners are clearly a little longer then the inside ones.

You can find them on ebay for $215 shipped.

eBay Motors: Ecotec 2.0L supercharged Header Cobalt SS Ion Redline (item 160325201761 end time Apr-06-09 17:14:02 PDT)

Then I would mate that up with either a ZZP or a CTI downpipe.

You are probably going to want something a little bigger then the GMPP cat-back. I would suggest the CTI 2.5" over the axel bend replacement w/ a magnaflow muffler.

CTI 2.5 Over Axel Replacement with muffler and tip Over The Top Performance

Or the **** 2.5" cat-back

OTT 304 Stainless Cat-Back Over The Top Performance

I 2nd this. lol. we have a GB on them now for 70+ship.
I will be doing my car almost identically to yours performance-wise, and that piece makes it a full 2.5" catback out of the stock. You want a link to an amazing sounding muffler for 101 shipped for it also PM me.
Everything looks spot on the list though other than that, I would get the K&N though, I can get you those cheap too ..unless you kept your AEM and are using that.

So are you going to make yours different by going with an Intense Stage 5 kit?

I don't think so.

There are different ways of building a car. But for most people on this site the two most important things are cost and reliability.

Using those two points as his deciding factor he is doing the right thing.

I personally would like to see someone try the new ZZP Stage Kits (If they ever release them) but I would not recommend it since their is not enough data out on them yet.

The sad part is that's a self-fulfilling prophecy. No one will buy the ZZP stage kits unless there's more data, and it's hard to get more data without buying them and doing more dyno time, etc.

He can't put his AEM SRI back on because he sold it to me during his part-out. Same with his Hurst shifter. Adrian, I wouldn't go for another AEM, go for the K&N, DTCD21 has really good deals on them for only a little more than you'd pay for the SRI, and more whine.

Adrian, you're doing everything I wish I could do to my car. Just don't have the money. I have to get married instead, so I have to do all of this little by little, and that's hard when you have to replace your front struts, brake pads, and rotors all at the same time. For that much money, I could have had the ****S1 kit myself, but I have to keep mine running safely and reliably because it's my DD. However, I'll be following along, glad you decided to keep your RL.
