Shifter Fix.

Well after dealing with a broken shift knob for almost two months, i just got it fixed today. The dealer said tehy never got the part in till now but i think they just forgot about it. but any way i was really surprised on their fix for a broken shift knob. emphasis on the knob.
when i went i had asked them to replace the whole boot setup because i had a small problem with the pull up ring too.
well any way it turns out the fix for this situation is to replace the entire shifter. apparently the dealershit couldnt just order a new boot and knob. they had to get a whole shifter setup.
it took about 2 hours to do and im happy but it seems like such a waste of money for the dealership. (still under warranty for me)
also this shifter actually feels a little tighter while in gear, not so much side to side play.

I just took mine into the stealership today for that same problem. The guy said he thinks Saturn had a TSB about it and that he'd have to order a whole new shifter assembly to fix the problem. Does seem kind of overkill for such a little problem but then again, I'm not paying for it.

That is correct. Although it's NOT an official TSB yet. It's still at the PI (Preliminary Information) level. PI's are usually destined to be TSBs, eventually, but are considered proprietary information. I beleive the person that posted it was a Saturn Tech and has since removed it. Long story short the current fix is to drill the knob, then glue-it and screw-it to secure it. The PI requests the dealers to no longer just replace shifter for this issue as they will eventually come off as well. (there's nothing different about the replacement shifter)

My complete assembly was replaced a while back and hasn't come off yet. I bet Saturn realized they couldn't afford all the assembly replacements and also that it just prolonged the inevitable.

I think from having the broken knob so long I trained myself to shift without putting a pull on the knob. My hand kinda rests on the knob and shifts from the reverse lock.

I had mine replaced this past week. They claim they re-did my entire assembly as well. For some reason it doesn't feel as "short" as the previous shifter. Also I think the tech that took mine for a test drive must've run into the Rev-Limiter because I'm now having trouble with the car starting, and it doesn't feel as brisk as it used to, maybe its in my head who knows. I'm thinking Spooner (if it was you that stated this first) was right when he said running into the Rev-Limiter affects the Cam Sensor. Oh well, Back to the dealership....

after driving around for a few days with my new shifter i definatelyagree with TXRLU. The shifter doesnt feel as short as it was before. I kinda like it though it also feels a little tighter, like there is not as much side to side play while its in gear. and to comment on what cole said that is definately truee too. after shifting weith a broken one for 2 months i definately learned how to finesse it into gear.
