General Shifting Thread

I'm talking slow driving here, nothing over 3500 rpms. Slowing down to a light in 4th gear still coming to a halt, at around 1500 rpms, i use the smallest of pull and it slips out of gear without disengaging the clutch. I can do this in any gear, just pulling it out without using the clutch. I did it in my moms car when i was learning out to drive...is this good? It doesn't seem to hurt anything and there arn't any bad noises. Anyone else ever do that?

When you are at a low speed in a high gear there is minimal pressure being put on the transmission. This would make it easy to slip it out of gear. I can do this. I wouldn't say it just slips out, but I don't break a sweat.

I had this arguement with my wife. I told her I could shift without using the clutch with no grind. she said I was crazy, so out to the car we go. I had no problem until 4th gear. I ground it a little but not bad. so lets just say on my next night off she will be a little busy making good on her bet. lol

this is just load vs rpm matching. its normal. at that time there is basic 0 load on the tranny no positive load ie acceleration, no neagative load ie high rpm engine braking.

so it's safe to do this? I don't want to slowely grind anything down or w/e, the tranny illudes my knowledge sometimes.

safe yeah in terms. If you have to pull more then a simple nudge to get out of gear then no its not good your putting friction/load on parts that arent deisgned along this premise. As for shifting without clutch in terms yes its safe. If you are real good at rpm matching you will be fine. But if you are off by even 100rpms and your holding it against till it goes in your wearing synchros. I can shift my car without the clutch but only with concentration and skill.

Agreed with goofy. I typically do not use the clutch ever for 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 under normal driving. Keeps me awake.
