gas mileage

yesterday I was driving and my car ran out of gas on me....the light hadnt been on very long and luckily I was right in front of a gas station.....so I put $10 in gas which should have gotten me around 3 gallons.....I drove a little bit, less than 15 miles and the light was back on again and the needle was on E......I took it into Saturn this morning and they checked everything out and couldnt find anything wrong with it so I filled up the tank to check the gas mileage

at what point should the low fuel light come on....I thought it was at 1 gallon.....for it to come back on in less than 15 miles after putting 3 gallons in something is wrong

When I first got the car, I filled it a few times up right when the light came on. I could only put in 11 gallons at that point, if even that much. With our 13.5 gallon tank, that means 2.5 gallons are left when the light comes on. Sooo it's a possibility that's what's happening to you, especially with these gas prices where $10 is not a lot anymore.

I thought we had a 12 gallon tank?

Hmm. I'm gonna have to figure out my mileage. Then again, I've been getting around 200 miles or so on what I thought was 12 gallons. Either way, 180-200 mi. per fill up, and I usually put 12 gallons in. So not too bad.

13.3?? You're nuts. I drive around on E all day. I've NEVER gotten more than 11.9 gallons in the car, maybe a little over 12 once. I could see 12.5...

I have put 13.14 gallons in on one fill. So its definitely 13.5. And yes, I know, I was pushing it on that one, haha.

What do you usually get a tank?

I'm thinking I might be getting poorer than avg. MPG. 180-200 mi. a tank. But, then again, I drive like a nut at night, while trying to conserve in the morning.

Plus ~35-45 min of idling, stop and go, each morning and afternoon, five days a week, probably doesn't help.

I'm pretty sure it says its 13.5, but i'm with spooner, there is no way I've ever put more than 12 at a max. Even with driving around for a decent amount after that light has gone off. And to SLS... do you floor it out of every light or something?? I'm getting about 275 per tank in my car per tank and thats not much highway driving at all. And I might shift early compared to some, but I didn't think I shifted early enough to notice a 80-100 mile per tank difference.

I see... I posted too late. I'm not in much bumper-to-bumper traffic here so I'm not really sure what someone that has to deal with that all the time is getting. But yeah, normal driving gets me around 275 a tank. If I get too crazy I can notice a difference in the mileage, but I usually just stretch it to 275 each time.
