RL v. mid-late 80s Vette

Just got my new RL yesterday, and finally getting used to the stick. But finally had my first race today, that I started.

It was a mid to late 80s Vette. Nothing special, I know...but not a car I'd ever thought of taking on in anything else I used to drive

Lined up at a red light on a four-lane around here...green, he takes off. I get a decent launch, surprising since this is my first 5spd. We stayed nose to nose 1st-2nd. He pulled a little when I was low in the powerband, but I got a lil ahead when my engine started going "REEEEEEEEE!".

Then I missed the 2nd-3rd shift But I still took him to 60, and he glanced over, suprised to see me still there. Next light, he said, "WTF is that car?" So I told him.

Nothing special, but felt pretty good. Gotta practice!

Hell yeah!!!!

The haters will be here soon to tell you that this isn't possible, but the RL owners all know it is.

I still have trouble launcing this car and I've owned it for 10 months.

I also HATE how first gear hits the rev limiter so quickly. Second and third gear kick ASS though.

Yeah...in relation to first gear. I notice that w/ a good launch, 1st gear is essentially wheel spin after 3k rpm, but it gets up and flies. But damn, it bounces off the rev limiter so soon. But you're right, 2nd gear's a blast once the wheels grab.

It was possible, even with a novice driver. I could tell he was WOT...his engine was screaming...and belching black smoke. Too bad I don't know more about those model year vettes; would be interested in their HP/TQ ratings. Also, I think he was an auto.

I think their HP was about 230 to 240 and they weighed quite a bit. At least, I know that to be true of the late 80's Vettes.

Quite honestly, if you wanna race somebody, you usually have to be the instegator. People ususally think that a Saturn can't do squat and most have never even heard of the Red Line, which makes it even sweeter when you win.

Mid/late 80s C4s are not easy to tell apart other than the wheels. The 84 is easy with the "cross(cease)-fire injection" on the side moulding. If its an 84 you are dealing with only 205hp. Nothing to brag about if you beat that. But, even in the later 235-245hp L-98s (tuned-port injection) the standard axle was 2.59:1 - not exactly dragstrip cars. Other ratios were available though. You'd have to be a real Vette head to tell at a glance what you might be dealing with. I have an 88 auto with Z52 suspension which included 17's and 3.07:1. I don't have a dyno or dragstrip nearby so I don't know exactly what it will do, but when I get on it hard enough to run past 3000 rpm, up its gonna break loose hitting 2nd. 340 ft-lbs torque at 3200 is good. The best I can say with L-98 C4s is, if it's got 16" tires, give it a try. Otherwise you're in for a tough race.

This site has a few times for Vettes but doesn't show any details of configurations. Its also quite interesting to browse.

wow nice site, i added that one to my favorites for a quick reference. And yah, i've never had someone pick on me. I'm always the one that has to start a race and it gets annoying. I hear some people say that some honda was revving at them but thats never happened to me. It sucks

You need 8 bright guages, underbody lights, fake HiDs, tribibal graphics down the side, a loud ass fart can, and a huge wing to get races.
