Late-80's 911 on the way to school . . .

On the way to school this morning, I felt in a particular hurry to waste some of the $3.29 premium gas I'd put in my car. The windows were down, it was about noon, sunny, and I'd just had a wonderful conversation with my beautiful girlfriend. Things were well in the world.

About halfway to school, a purple older-body Porsche 911 Carrera slid into the interstate, his windows down, rocking to some early-90's rock music. Dennis, my good friend & classmate, scoffed at him; he looked sort of like a tool. We then got into a discussion about whether or not I could take him. I was vehement that it would at least be an even match, if I didn't have the slight edge. We trailed him for two or three miles, just watching him; Dennis wanted to know how the Redline would stack up against a Porsche.

I decided it'd be a fun little romp - we had about a half mile of freeway between us & the next group of cars, and only a silver Mercedes SLK behind. So I did a quick jaunt into the slow lane, got along side him, gave him a little revv, and dropped it into 4th and slid away. He didn't really seem interested, but a little way up the road, the SLK decided HE wanted to play. It was an SLK320 Kompressor, so it was the supercharged 3.2; I really didn't know what to expect, but he got up next to me, gave me the nod, so I did the 5-3 downshift at about 75, and pulled on him FAST. I don't know if he was really that into racing, or just seeing what my little Saturn had, but I shut it down at 115, and he was way behind.

This piqued the 911's interest, though; I don't know if it was seeing my car wail down the freeway, or just seeing that another German car getting trounced by a Saturn, but he decided to fly up next to me and give it a go. Same jam as with the SLK - 75 roll, I downshifted to 3rd and heard his engine go, and I pulled about a carlength at the start, and he didn't gain any ground until I shut down at 120 and he shot past. Right as we were approaching the split where the highway did a little jaunt into & around a connecting road, he went the other way, and gave me a nice thumbs up, which I returned. Then he checked his rear view - the SLK wanted a shot at him now

Nice runs. Even though those kompressors are s/c'd, I'm not sure how much power they are pushing. Anyways, good kills.
