Tiburon GT V6

So I had to take my one buddy to go pick up his car today (too drunk last night). He has a 05 tiburon gt v6. I've driven it before and its not a bad car but definitely cant hang with the RL. So we're driving back on a four lane road. Each time we are coming to a red light, it turns green right before we can line up. So the on time he is stopped and im coming to a stop and it turns green. He guns it, and im still in second gear at about 10 MPH. I didnt feel like downshifting so I just left it there and he pulled a little till I got to 20 MPH and then just killed him once I hit 30. We stop another mile down the road and he was like "dude, I was hanging with you for a little bit." I burst his bubble when I told him I was in 2nd gear the whole time.

we went from about a 10 mph roll as we turned onto another four lane road and I kept it in first. That one was no contest.

I know this isnt a great kill since its not really on our level, I just had some fun b/c I never find anyone that wants to go. Need to find some better roads to drive on. 4 miles in the city to work isnt exacty race condusive.

Yeah Tibs are nice, I like the style of them. But they need some more muscle, I know modded they go like stink, but you have to spend the $$$.

I agree with the Tiberoun... I really like the lines, but it doesn't seem to have the guts that it looks like it should...

I have a friend who has an 04 Tibby, he has put quite a bit of money in it. i.e-
Centerforce clutch
Fendanza 8lb flywheel
Borla exhaust
Cold air intake
Short throw shifter

We went down to Vegas to run the midnight mayham races and his fastest time was a 16.0 flat. Granted he does have the six speed, and first gear to him was useless on the strip, I thought that it would have been faster though. Still a really nice car.

I don't get it; doesn't a v-6 tib rate at about 220 hp? Me thinks the car WEIGHS too much...

I thought they were rated at like 180, or in that range. Not anywhere near ours stock.

The 03-04 TibGT rates 181HP & 177 TQE. But correct me if I am wrong, but isn't there more to a quick car than HP? I know 1HP is enough to raise 1LB up 550FT in 1 second, OR raise 550 lbs up 1ft in 1 second @ sea level. But isn't torque just as, if not more, important @ getting the car down the street? Isn't that why mfg'ers are making enigines with torque curves starting sooner & staying flatter than HP?
Not to mention car weight, gearing, traction, & the driver?
Not really debatting anything here, just wondering why people (not anyone in this thread) put SO much into getting high HP #s when there is more to it than that...(unless, of course, high HP is their goal).

Well, HP is the easiest thing to measure and compare. People tend to compare HP, and leave torque till the end. Since HP is a calc related to torque, you tend to get both answer. If one car has 50 more hp than another, with the same weight, you know how the race will turn out, most of the time. If you have two cars with nearly identical HP and weight, then you can start turning to the torque comparison.

Like with the RSX and the Redline, both are nearly the same in HP and weight, but the low level torque of the RL just blows away the RSX. So when the light turns green you get your lead and keep it. The Tibby has similar torque as the RL, seeing as it's a V6 and all, but it's lacking by about 30-40 hp. So looking at what you're saying, you're right on the money. The torque and weight of the tibby is very simialr to the Redline, but it's lacking the HP to keep up.

TRUE, but isn't it also how you drive it? The 2nd latest Car and Driver shows a RSX TypeS & a coblat SS & RL running 6.4(RSX) & 6.2(SS/RL) to 60 & 14.9 (RSX) & 14.6 (SS/RL) in the quarter (or number close to that).
But playing Devil's Advocate, the 5-60 run was almost identical in the RLs, but almost a full 1 second slower in the RSX (let's not EVEN mention the WRX they had there )
Here is an example: At the SRT Track experience in Michigan this past August, a professional driver, in a SRT4 with 3 other passengers could still out run a 425HP Magnum SRT8 & 500-ish HP RamSRT10 through the road course with a 'regular' driver in the Magnum & Ram. Many times, the SRT4 would have to slow down to allow the SRT8 & SRT10 to catch up! So there is a lot to be said for a good driver. I guess one could say that almost regardless of the HP/TRQ, a good driver makes up for a 'multitude of (driving) sins' when compared to a bad/inexperienced driver.
