beat a 94 z28

my buddy drives a 1994 z28 and swore up and down he would beat me, he has a hooker muffler and k&n cold air(for any who know lt1's he also has the delteq coil per cylindar conversion) the first time we raced it was from about 5 mph and i left it in second he beat me. But we raced again from 5 and i dropped it into first and put about a car on him and it stayted that way till 125, i also raced him from a 40 roll and beat him, a 60 punch and beat him. i wish we coulda raced from a dig. his car ran a 14.1 at the track before exhaust and intake. im very pleased and it was fun to ask him how the super charger sounded, and then how the stock exhast sounded when passed him.

Maybe your buddy's mullet slowed him down?

Good kill!

Are you modded? My g/f followed me up to get my RL in my 96 Z28 A4 and on the way home we did a quick romp and I stayed a couple car lengths behind but I couldn't catch up My Z just has a hooker catback and a holley powershot drop in, otherwise it's all stock. Oh, I don't have a mullet either

Wow, apparently I have been out of the F-body scene for a while, I did not know there was a individual coil pack replacement for the opti-crap. Those things suck, especially the ones that did not draw a vacuum from the crank case (1993 to 1995 as I recall).

For anyone who cares or is intrested the Opti-spark in the LT-1's were driven off of the cam with a tiny drive shaft and mounted to the front of the timing cover under the water pump (another expensive part). They have an optical reciever inside that reads a wheel that has small holes in it the optical reciever sees through. In the older ones that had no vacuum line to them they were prone to getting dirt inside (or coolant) if a piece of dirt got into the wheel with the holes in it the reciever would miss it and the timing would go to shit and the car would die in short order. Very frustrating and not the easiest or cheepest item to repair.

Breech, this is not a huge surprise that he beat him. The LT1 was not the most consistant motor in the HP range. They varied in performance quite a bit. I had a 97 SS and it was a tird, even after BBK headers, exhaust and many other mods. No knock, no problems with the motor just not alot of power.

Been there done that on the opti. Was a serious PITA to replace and was pretty expensive too. The Delteq system does convert it over to individual coils however the opti is still retained for timing purposes unless you fab up a crank trigger system. I agree that the LT isn't the fastest thing around and a lot of them are tired by now but we went from a dig and from 0-60 the LT1 is just as good as an LS1 due to the fact that it gets it's peak torque so early in the rpm band, runs out of breathe pretty quickly past that though. We didn't go much past that because I didn't want to beat the hell out of the new RL so I guess it played to the Z's strength. BTW, nice kill, wasn't doubting the win for a sec....just curious if he was stock or modded to do it.

i had a cammed 355 lt1 with lots of motor work i went through freaking 3 opti's there 300 a peice... i kept getting a hesitation at about 6 grand(i hand the computer tuned bumped the shift points to 6,400) i found that it wasn't so much the optical sensor, it was more in the cap and rotor. i did the delteq coil per cylindar conversion and solved all my problems not to mention some really short wires = very litle resistance. im just glad i don't have to deal with a distributor underneath a galon of running coolant just waiting to drip for the water pump
