Confessions of a teen driver

...or also, confessions of a ricer.

I don't know WHY this crept into my head today, but it gave me a good laugh. Think back to when you first started to drive, or got your first car. What's the dumbest, most pointless thing you ever did, or claimed to do?

Two things shine in my mind. The first...when I started to drive, I learned on a '93 Astro van (also crashed it...). I was allowed to take it to school every now and then.

Anyway, I convinced my one friend the Astro had hydraulics. Why? Because I was a Teenage Ricer........in an Astro van.

What DID the Astro have? A good bit of torque down low (and that's about it), and a very soft suspension. By pumping the brakes, the van would "bounce." I did this repeatedly in the parking lot, or when my friend was behind me. He believed me...

...and the same kid has an old Ford Anal Probe he swore had "nitros." Weird, the same button also turned on his flashers...

The worst thing I did, gosh, this is hard to admit. Well, I saved up and bought a '91 Grand Prix SE coupe. That sucker had 110 sizzling horses of wheezy 3.1 liter power. 0-60, maybe. Well, fart cans were coming into style. My dad wouldn't stand for them.

Solution, a roofing nail and a tack hammer. Place nail over muffler. Tap nail into muffler. Repeat twice, go to the other muffler.

Sounded like Rosie O'Donnel on a treadmill. I could pull on horse-drawn Amish buggies, though. Cept for that one Amish kid who hooked up NAWZ to his horse...or maybe he just fed that horse can after can of baked beans. Look out for the after burners.

Well, my DIY speed-hole mufflers worked okay, until the holes started rusting and needed replaced....

My name is Jon, and I was once a ricer. Feels so good to get it off my chest.

Who's next?

My second car (first one the tranny finally died at 348k miles..'88 Saab 9000 turbo) was actually given to me by my father...a bright red '98 VW Cabrio..decided it didn't have enough power so with a little bit of sweet talk I managed to talk dad into helping me purchase a wrecked Golf VR6 and we did a swap...

Four months after? I flipped it over a guard rail that had been previously hit by a city truck..fortunately not my fault due to the left front blew out and forced me into it..

Lesson learned? No..

Porsche 951 bought shortly after and the poor engine gave (158k miles that hadn't been properly taken care of due to previous owner..I only put 10k miles on it..) 968 engine promptly shoved into the car...then supercharged...

Lesson: Even an 'exotic' isn't good enough stock..and 951 engines were hard to come by before I knew where to look.

Porsche 911: Brought home completely stripped..mom freaked out..dad had a good laugh. Four months later a beautiful 935 was sitting in the driveway..sold due to legal matters..

Lesson: Lawyers are expensive for tickets..

Yet another Porsche 944 : Felt pity for it and brought it home..where it still resides in my driveway..it's an automatic dog, but still handles like a charm and has that bit of mystic due to a cammed engine..minor headwork..and a few other things.

Lesson: Dunno yet...

I could keep going..but I'm getting up close to the Redline..

The worst thing I ever did is put stickers on my 04 2.2 Ion QC3 with the VTi tranny. I put HKS exhaust, AEM intake and Eibach spings on it and swore it was fast. I still regret putting any money into that car but it was fun to learn about cars on. I finally realized the error of my ways and got the RL. I never did anything ghetto ever though. I've hated ricers ever since I was little. Do things right or dont do it at all

i was 16 and got a 2003 s10, and put a flowmaster 40 series on it, and it sounded like $$$$, then i got a silver redline and did a bunch vinyls on it as you can see in the photo gallery got sick of it and got a 2005 z71 (GAS HOG), got rid of it and got a 2005 red redline, which i currenlty have and like it but am getting rid of it this summer to get a GTO, but i have had a number of cars to be 19 but i wish i would hve just kept the silver redline by now i would have enough money to twin charge it, but we learn from our mistakes right.....

I tyr not to speak of my frist car. I loved that thing. It was a 97 Saturn SL1 manual. I first replaced all the interior lights with blue LED's (it actually looked sweet as hell) then reapulsterd the interior with black (very nicly done actually). I proceded to tint my windows. 5% rear, 35% front. Got pulled over for the front and had to remove it. Then I lost 2 hub caps. So I bought a set of Al rims on ebay for $150 shipped (15" so I didn't need to get new tires as well, mine were brand new at the time) After that the muffler rusted through. I didn't want to spend $90 on a stock muffler, so I bought a $35 dollar universal 'performance' muffler and a $20 tip. It actually looked pretty sharp, the tip was 2.5" chrome. I then installed my own power locks and my own keyless entry and wired the entire thing up.
Not to mentiong the 12" sub I had (which was stolen one night when my brother left the car unlocked).

My name is Brian, and I was once a borderline ricer.

EDIT: THe car now has 147,000 miles ok it and running like a champ. It is owned by my brother who used to drive an escort zx2 with a tranny on the fritz. I still love that car, mainly because all the work I did to it, and I know that car inside and out better than almost anyone because of it. I can only hope to feel that way about my RL,I'm just too damn afraid to mess with it bc it's still brand spankin new!

ALSO!!! : I am still 19 and concidered a teenager!
