Car and Driver Bashes E85

Just read this month's rag. I loose more respect for these folks everytime I read one. I gotta stop, but come on, its a car magazine, right?

Anywho, they have a 5 page article on Ethanol, and are completely closed minded and leave out lots of IMPORTANT info, coming off both ignorant and short sighted. This is just spreading more political BS, so it seems the media is in league with the Oil companies further than we could imagine. Yikes. I'm not an EXPERT on ethanol, but I my best friend is a world renouned chemist and I have a pretty darn good background in e85 compared to these people writing articles. (I'm hoping for some responses here)

If they said that E85 is a pipe dream, they're right on the money. I'm a tree hugging maniac, and I'll agree completely with them. What does it say exactly?

You want to tell the country of Brazil along with the MILLIONS of Ford and GM vehicles there that they are a pipe dream?

I just quoted the wrong part I guess, I was referring to his pipe dream and them being "right on the money."

How does that have any effect on the usefulness of E85? Brazil doesnt exactly have as many cars on the road, and Ford has been selling E85 cars for over a decade.

E85 requires more energy to produce than it makes, and if every car ran on E85 it would require 95% of the acres in the US to grow enough crops to make the E85. Not the answer.

You are going to believe numbers from a study conducted by a Mobil employee? These are NOT facts, they are what the media wants us to believe. In Brazil, instead of using coal to power the plants that produce ethanol, they use, guess what, ethanol! Sure it is a parasitic loss, but so is using a supercharger to increase horsepower, it works out much the same: the process is self-sufficient. Maybe CORN is not an answer, I'll give you that, but that doesn't mean ethanol isn't. And this is today's tech and efficiency. We will eventually run out of gasoline, it is a FACT. If you have a better alternative, I'd like to research that, too. My point is that we should be looking for alternatives, not ignoring the problem.

The goal is not to completely replace oil. The goal is to supplement. That is workable. Of course it isn't the answer if you are going to try and completely replace oil. But combined with other alternatives like biodiesel it is a good alternative.
