need a laptop nerd (or hell any computer one)

I've fallen behind the times with memory, I know there used to be the problem of not being able to mix and match RAM.

anyways as per the other thread i'm upgrading the memory of my laptop.

currently it has a 256 MB ddr2 (i can get the rest of the info if you want).

there's an empty slot, can I add 512 and not have any problems, or do the numbers need to be the same?

thanks in advance!

Depends on the laptop in question... 90% of the new(er) ones don't need paired memory, and as long as the mainboard can address the amount you're adding, you should be fine. I'm lacking in the hardware dept lately, since I've been doing all this coding... If you don't use the same speed or higher, you're gonna slow the whole thing down though.

Before this goes really crazy, I can run VIN numbers. I have been doing that, and only that, for him. Anyone need a VIN run, let me know. Anyone want something else, ask superbird.

lol likewise, and I was stupid 4 years ago and bought RDRAM and I only remember that crap, and ugh RDRAM is so damn specific with what it wants.

i know the motherboard can handle the extra memory (at least I hope.... lmfao, it's a brand new laptop, if it can't handle 768, I got some problems ), at the same time I don't wanna buy it and realize the other module is useless

You can always return it, right? Take the laptop down with you, swap it in the car, and return it if it's not right. You could just check the manufacturer's website and get the RAM stats...

problem is I'm getting the RAM online (i sure as hell ain't buying anything that i don't have to from a retailer, those guys try to screw me hardcore). and toshiba's website doesn't have this laptop listed, and their search function SUCKS.

i'm trying to find some good specs online, but ain't got crap, the manual they included is crap too, I need to figure out mainly what it's expandable to

What you will want to do is pull the 256, put the 512 in its spot then put the 256 in the open slot ok.
