helicopters as sunday driver

OK so.... My mom calls me today and asks if I want to go with her to go get ice cream at a local shop. (For you local guys, Erma's Frozen Custard Stand). We are eating a cream puff with Vanilla custard and lots of fudge. This is a perfect fall day and a great after dinner sunday outing. And an excellent date spot.

So we are sitting there chatting and this small 2 seater helicopter passes by and circles around. The he lands on the grass behind the patio about 50 yards away from all the buildings. He gets out with this woman. They get 2 ice cream cones, get in the chopper and leave. Weird.

Can you do that? Just land where ever you want? We we goofing around about calling the cops but what would you ticket them for? But then again I can't get pissed because I would have done it too if I had a helicopter. I figured you would have to file some kind of flight plan if you take off and land in a location other than where you took off from. So basically, is using your helicopter to go get ice cream legal to do?

absolutely its legal within certain restraints being one who is working on my pilots license all one needs to do is have a general aviation certificate. That being said if he is taking off from airport to airport then the FAA requires that he file a flight plan, as long as he remains in Class D/E airspace and maintains an altitude of at least a thousand feet over populated areas he can pretty much do whatever he wants

zvillepimp1982 has it correctly, however if the property owners wanted to be an ass they could raise a fuss.

What colors was it and did you happen to see any lettering on the side of it? I may know who owns it

I fly for the national Guard, Hence my forum name lol to bad they retired our cobra's and gave us Hawks and Chinooks
