Question Torque Damper on bottom of motor??? Filled factory motor mounts???

Got the word that I can order a torque damper. I figure the best placement for a single damper is in the middle of the motor rather than on an end. Has anyone installed a damper on the bottom side of the motor to whatever chassis component there is under there??? Machining my own aluminum brackets and buying an Ebay damper. I just can not see how a single side (passenger) mount damper could keep the tranny side mounts from being twisted. The best damper mount would be off a big bellhousing bracket to the firewall but there is plenty of options to mount a damper on the bottom side of the motor smack dab in the center to equalize the torque seen on the drivers side mounts and the passenger side mount.

Anyone else thinking like me on this idea?

Second idea: take this tube of 3M Windo-Weld and fill in at least the bottom center factory motor mount. How buzzy does this car get with a urethane mount or all of them filled in??? My SC-2 has stiffer mounts than stock and practically every plastic body panel buzzes as well as the rear view mirror. I don't want my RL to buzz like this as it is too nice of a car to turn it into a buzz ride.

Many thanks,
Mike

I would think the best dampener would have 2 torklinks, 1 set up for push, and 1 for pull, not sure about placement though, but they do make adjustable ones with a spring to smooth vibrations. I think I recall people saying the torque foreward engine braces did make some more vibration at idle, but not all that bad.

As for the motor mounts, it's better to use an industrial urethane, or a 2 part catalyzed material with a hardener like duramix or fusor...I believe torque foreward sells filled mounts with industrial urethane, and you core yours back to them after installation so your car isn't disabled while the urethane cures.

Oh, and glad to see you got the comp pkg red 06 like you wanted, congrats man!

Uh. I've got no idea. But yes, with a single damper, one in the middle is probably better than on the end.

Theoretically, you could ask Cynic, but I don't know if he's put anything on his own RL yet.

But if you're near the Twin Cities, you should totally come out to one of the MNSCC meets (and you could bug Cynic then). Then again, I need to get out to those too.

I've got the torque braces, motor mounts, and strut bar on my car. And i'll address your questions here:

1. Our torque brace is designed to be purchased as a set. Meaning you SHOULD purchase the dual. By having both (one on each side of the engine bay facing opposite directions) you effectively stop the "twisting" motion of the engine that can be caused by only dampening one side. A bracket in the center would be more effective, but now you're talking drilling into the firewall etc... which is not a convenient bolt on mod like people want. You'll also remember that if there's too much force you'll be able to warp that hole thereby rendering your brace useless. I'd be careful about placement. Make sure the metal you drill into is thick enough. As an aside...we offer the single torque brace because we realize that people don't have pocketfuls of money and hey...some dampening is better than none right? But if you think you're going to use a single for dragging....ikes good luck.

2. Don't be a tool, shell out for construction grade urethane. Window weld is a cheap and crappy substitute. It will dry out and be fairly ineffective over a period of time. Also remember that you need to let the urethane cure for at least 2 days prior to installing on your vehicle.

Shop Smart....Shop S-mart.

yes our mounts take 2 to 3 days to cure right, and the placement of our torque braces are on opposite sides of the engine( one is top and front, and the other is bottom and rear.) you can place them other places, but we found them not to be near a affective.

at www.mcmastercarr.com you can order urethane casting compounds at various durometers and volumes, and it is industrial quality. I order materials from them all the time. To be honest, I've ordered things at 10pm sunday, and it was at my door monday morning, with standard shipping! They may even have dampeners.. I'm going to go look now!
