All this talk of ice boxes.. Here is mine

This is a 30 second model i made ti give you an idea of what I plan on doing.. and filling it with liquid nitrogen. Anyone can get liquid nitrogen as long as you have a vacuum botle to store it in (think thermos) and it cost's about 2$ a liter from pretty much any welding gas supplier (there are tons). It might cost me... $50 at most to make. I plan on scavenging the heat exchanger and the rest will be 1/6" steel.

I made one side clear in this so you can see the exchanger. It's really quite simple. Now that I thnk about it, I think I may put 2 exchangers with a gap in the middle. That way you can put ice/dryice and water in there.

I'm sorry, did you say LIQUID nitrogen? Are you sure that's what you mean?

-318 degrees of sweetness.... I'm really have a hard time seeing why not. As long as the pump keeps the water from becoming stagnent, and there is antifreeze in it, it shoudn't freeze up, just get COLD AS HELL! either way, the box would work for anything, but im sure as hell gonna try ln2

I see a LN system working if its a spray system on an aquator, like a NOS spray kit.
Hit a button and it sprays the heat exchanger with LN, freezes it, make your run down the strip.

But if your planning on submerging the HE in the LN i for see lots of head aches and problems.

The anti-freeze is good to -20... not -318! Also, do you plan on shutting the car off ever? How will you get this stuff out once it's in there? Just wait for it all to boil out before shutting the car off? If you get the intake temps too low, the intercooler pump will shut off as well.

Rice's box with dry ice is pretty good, I'd start with that if I were you, but if not, let us know how it goes!

I advise rethinking this plan while sober. Repeat as necessary.

Ok, 2 heat exchangers, a drainage hole in the back (with steel/brass ballvalve) and a 1.5" gap between the exchangers for ice/dryice/frozen yogurt. I just made the top held down with 1/4-20 bolts for now. I'll think of somehting better

ln2, is ectually -195, i goofed on that one. I ws thinking liquid helium, which would be WAYYY out of control, although i can get my hands on some

Now we're talkin'. The only thing you'll need is some kinda vent, due to the sublimation properties of dry ice.

The reason I think it may be possible is that the coolant is... well not all that cool. because of the Leidenfrost effect, the nitrofen touching the evaporater flash boils, and nitrogen in gas form is one hell of an insulator. This will keep it from getting too cold.

But this leads me to another idea.... what about 2 heat exchangers, but not in series. you fill the box with water, pour in ln2 into one of the exchangers, which will freeze the entire box, and run the coolant through the other. THat is what i will do i think if it gets too cold, use water as a buffer. The thing is though, ln2, has WAY better heat dissapating charactoritics than ice.

damn it, i meant to make a vent in the lid, back to the model! But you don't want too loose of a vent, because the more pressure you can keep on it, the colder it will stay. A srping loaded safty check valve is in order!
