http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/te...ems/index.html

This is an article I found while trying to research the best possible performance oriented exhaust combination from the header back instead of just going with what's most popular or sounds the best. I like the idea of the ZZP ceramic coated header with the 1 3/4" primaries, but it comes with 2.5" or 3" downpipe options. Assuming the collector outlet is 2.5" I am left with the question of whether or not it would be beneficial to continue the 2.5" diameter throughout the remainder of the exhaust or allow it to open up to 3" at the downpipe.

Any thoughs on the subject?

Going to a 3" dp and cat-back will be beneficial for noise for sure. Im sure you will see a small increase in performance in the higher RPMs.

Using the information from post #92.

The header you are looking at is going to flow at least 500 CFM.
A aftermarket 2.5" dp with a high flow cat is going to flow about 450 CFM. So your have already created a bottle neck after your header. A 2.5" cat-less dp will flow 500 CFM. So that will match the flow of your header.

Next would be your cat-back system. According to the flow calculation a 2.5" cat-back with straight through muffler will flow 450-500 CFM. That all depends on how restrictive your muffler is.

So here is a summary of sticking with a 2.5" system:

header 500 CFM
2.5" dp 450 CFM
2.5" catless dp 500 CFM
2.5" cat-back 450-500 CFM

Now if you were thinking about a 3" system with that header here is what you would be looking at:

header 500 CFM
3" dp 500 CFM
3" catless dp 750 CFM
3" catback 650-725 CFM

IMO going 3" after that header is not worth it. The header would be the most restrictive part of your system. If you are looking for the noise of a 3" system get a header with a 3" outlet and a cat-less dp. But it would be loud as all hell!

I think you would be very happy with a 2.5" system. Here are your two options:

header 500 CFM
2.5" dp 450 CFM
2.5" catback 450-500 CFM

Total System Max flow: 450 CFM

header 500
2.5" cat-less dp 500 CFM
2.5" cat-back 450-500 CFM

Total System Mat flow: 450-500 CFM

Most people will agree that a 2.5" exhaust system is just fine for a GM stage 2 setup. It all depends on your performance goals. If your goals include 60# injectors and a 2.5" pulley some people would make a case for a 3" setup.

I hope this helps.

Ok. Thank you. That answers how much it can flow. So a 3" dp w/cat will flow equal to the header. Now how about the affect on velocity and scavenging?

Are the headers available with a 3" collector? The only one that mentioned the size of the collector, I believe, was Vibrant and it was 2.5". Still researching...

I know 3" is going to be loud, but that's not what I'm after. I'll try to quiet it down as much as possible using resonator and muffler combos, that have been proven on other setups of course, without affecting flow. I might be shooting myself in the foot, but I do plan on forcing a lot more air in when better blowers become available (TVS??? Any updates???). I'm trying to do my homework on everything internal and bolt-on first so I don't have to go back and change too much in the future.

I really cant help you there. That is beyond my noob knowledge. All I know is that the Cobalt racing team switched from a 3" exhaust to a 2.5" exhaust because they preferred the performance gains in the low to mid rpm range. I don't know the specifics on their setup or anything like that.

If you are building a dyno queen most guys recommend a 3" exhaust.

I don't think there is enough information available right now to make that decision. I know there are lots of high hp LSJs out there but most of the owners don't waist their time on this forum because of all the unnecessary Off Topic threads and whoring that goes on here.

Unfortunately the information you are looking for will probably never show up in this forum. I would suggest checking out c o l b a l t s s.net. There are a lot more users over there who are not afraid to drop money into their cars and share what they learned with everyone else.

No but here is a sound clip of my Magna Flow cat-back vs the stock exhaust. Other mods at the time were GM Stage 2, 2.8" pulley, K&N CAI.

Stock

MagnaFlow 2.5" cat-back

Since then I have replaced my dp with a ZZP 2.5" cat'd peice. I should try to get a sound clip of that sometime.
