I would like to see short ram comparisons, like the weapon R and AEM using the stock airbox...Me have no interceptor yet

rob, I have the 2.25" GMPP exhaust installed.

All i have is the stock box with K&N drop in filter. Well plus my other mods
Things that can create differences in MAF lb/min:
1. Temperature (of the ambient air, the intake temperature, AND the engine temperature will determine the Volumetric Efficiency)
2. Altitude (more specific Density Altitude)
3. Speed (ram effect)
4. Pulley
5. Clenliness of filter material
6. (not the most common) Oil on MAF

Go for it!...just remember to keep as many constants the same as possible (i.e. ambient temperatures, engine temperature, same road, same gear and speed, etc.)

Im going to be doing another test this weekend with the following:
1. Clean K&N Typhoon
2. Clean K&N Drop-in on the stock box
3. Old Stock paper filter w/ 8K mi on it...

On another note, on the K&N the Boost Bypass would kick in at 6K rpm (according to the boost gauge), with the stock intake the boost bypass did not kick in until 6.5K (according to boost gauge). Food for thought.
Nice test Socal.

I'd like to add a little food for thought.

I'd bet a coffee the K & N CAI is causing the MAF sensor to read less mass than there actually is going through the intake tract. The mass air sensing element can only sample a small cross section of the air flowing through the intake tube. Generaly you would calibrate it so that the data taken from this small area can be scaled up, with some fudge factors, to represent the total airflow of the system. GM calibrated the PCM to read mass properly, through the MAF with this particular configuration.

Most of the aftermarket intakes will change the accuracy of the air mass reading because they change the cross sectional air distribution profile in the tube where the MAF is installed.

How many complaints have we seen where someone uses a calibration (begins with an i )that was worked out for a stock intake, adds an aftermarket intake and bingo dangerously lean. The PCM thinks there is less air going in than there actually is because the MAF calibrations are now in error.

^thank you for the compliment, and...exactly, more turbulent going past the MAF
...im waiting to get HPT to findout if we actually see a higher MAP readout with the different intakes. but for now...i still stand by my readings. The stock box works fine, and the K&N adds noise (and may take away flow). We'll see for sure this weekend, im gonna try to get 2-3 passes on each set-up. If anyone has a short ram they can donate, ill try and get that, also.

one thing I would like to add albeit a little off topic, I know a few cases where people were "over" oiling their K&N's. Part of it is that as a little dirt builds up they actually work better, and they dont need that much oil. Great comparison though, my gf just got me the typhoon for xmas, so we'll see how it runs in the colder weather up here too.

^when i change the oil on my filter, i actually oil it alot, then throw it on my shop vac for about 15-20 minutes...youd be surprised at how much oil comes out of the filter. To seep up the rest, i wad up a bunch of shop towels (the blue ones) and shove them into the filter after taking it off the shop vac, let sit for about an hour. It works really well. i havent gotten a p1182 or p0171 in a long long time.
oh, almost forgot, i make sure to put the dry filter over the filter while it is on the shop vac. it keeps the dog hair out...

Good idea, my last car wasn't too sensitive to it, I could really tell when it had to much oil tho, the black plastic intake plumbing had oil all the way up it. One thing that help there was even giving a shot of carb cleaner up the pipe with the car running, too much and the car stalls though

I guess I see how your numbers work, but I do not believe that the stock air box flows better than the K&N. The BIG red flag to that from my experience is the 1-2.5psi gain in boost following install w/ the only weather condition change was 1 degree in ambient temp. I also noticed a drop in IAT1, contributing to a drop in IAT2, even if it was only 2-6 degrees. Like stated previously, I think that the data you collected is skewed by the diameter and change in the air turbulence with a larger, smoother intake tract.

socal: did you get to run those tests/collect data yet? I'm just curious as to whether or not I should invest the $280 for a Typhoon. Thanks for the time you've put into this btw.
