I'm going to ask this now, and again when you guys do receive it. I want to know if this short shifter is designed where there's no play back and forth when it's in neutral. I'm wondering if the neutral is more like the center position, and all the gears star out from this central point. My friend with a GTI was telling me that he drove a friends GTI whose short shifter was designed this way, and that's what a true short shifter is like.

sp00ner, is this what it's like in your hurst shifter in the Camaro or Corvette? (I think you said you had one in one of those).

Hopefully you guys can understand what I tried to explain. If not, I can give it another try.

So then to shift from 1st to 2nd you have to arc instead of pull straight back? Doesn't sound like a good system to me. Not sure how that would work either without changing the trans internals too.

I don't know about arcing it to shift. It's more like tipping the shaft in the direction of the right gear. It's be just like how we shift now, but you have to know pretty much the right direction of each gear.

I'm just trying to describe it the same way my friend described it. I don't know if they're actually designed like this, because I see what you're saying about the arcing. He just described it as a star design with no play of the stick in neutral.

The B&Ms I'm used to from the Camaro and Mustangs and such, had a normal gate setup, but the shifter did feel like jpapa is describing. I think it's more the way you percieve it than the way it is. Going from N to 1st would feel like you were pushing up and to the left, but in reality the movments were so short, and had such little play, that it seemed like going up and to the left rather than move left, then push up. The shifts were so short on some of them, that finding N was tricky at first. Someone did point out though, that the ones I'm used to are also mechnical shifters. This is a cable one. In the Camaro, you pop the shifter off, and you're staring at the tranny's tailshaft. In fact, the shifter actually bolts to the tranny, not the car. I'll do some pics, here's what I do know about it.

It does have a removeable shift knob.

It moves the entire shift setup forward slightly.

The throws are shorter.

It's all aluminum... should be soild, someone even said the bushings were aluminum.
