Intercooler Ice Box Ideas...

Your's truly is gonna put together and ice box setup for the Redline. I've seen the writing on the wall, and it's time to give it a shot. For you 1/4 mile guys, it's a great way to knock some time off for the cost of ice. This is a proven idea from anyone that runs an A-W intercooler like ours. Even without ice, it's gonna increase the amount of time you can run under hard boost levels before heat soak kicks in.

If anyone has any experience with something like this, or anyone that has a good idea for components and such, let me know. I'd be more than willing to share the plans with people once it's built, or possibly sell the units for a small profit if it's worth it.

It's gonna be hard to really get developed before winter comes and goes, so if there's someone that's in the south that could give me a hand, that would be much appreciated as well. Thanks!

Sp00ner, I'd love to know what you have planned. It'd be awesome to see someone throw one of these on for a minimal amount of money and see some nice gains. I'd love to get one and throw some Dry Ice in there for the Quarter Mile or at a Road/Auto-X course.

My thought was to cut a vent in the top of the airbox and drop some dry ice in there before you start running at the track and then instant cool.

DRY ice is CO2, not H2O, so no water.

What about using the NX Ntercooler spray bar and positioning it over the RL's intercooler, or rigging up another sort of CO2 sprayer? If there is enough room to fit by the intercooler it should drop the temperatures signifigantly.

Some of you guys are off track. I think what SpOOners talking about is splitting the IC coolant line between the IC "radiator" and laminovas and inserting another heat transfer device. We've talked about this before in another thread. I'd use a plastic cooler/ice chest with a heater core inside. Fill it with ice and enough water to get good heat transfer to the fins. It should knock the IC coolant temps down considerably. You don't want dry ice because it would freeze the coolant and you'd have no cooling. Ice has a pretty good heat of fusion value and will provide more heat sink than you might think. Its been way too long since thermodynamics for me to do an exact calculation, but my gut feel is that a small box should be able to get the whole system down to near 32 degrees before a run. An overide switch on the pump would let you do it without even running the engine.

FYI, the 6 pack cooler I use for my lunch fits fine in the big space on the left side. A bigger cooler would be better for autox or racing but you'd probably have to mount it in the trunk. The trick would be to find an auto parts supplier that would let you browse through some heater cores to find the right one. I'd look for one with the right size lines (I think someone said 5/8") and that fits in your box standing on edge so you could pack ice on both sides.
