Arrow Question about Redline intakes in general

I remember going to the local Saturn Dealer the other day (it was a couple months ago by now). I was going to get a K&N air filter for my car. I looked it up on the K&N website and printed of the sheet and everything for it. I asked the install guys about it. They told me that it wouldn't work, because since the Redline is Supercharged, the new filter / air intake would be feeding too much air into the engine and supercharger.

I know that there are tons of you guys out there with intakes on your Redlines. was he just bull shitting me, or what? If i bought a whole K&N cold air intake, but i see much of a performance gain? Also, would it cause any problems with my engine / supercharger in the future?

The feeding too much air into the blower/engine part is not correct. The blower is going to displace 1L/rev almost regardless of what you do. Getting cooler, denser air into the blower is helpful. If you push too much air through the engine, the car will run lean. That's a tuning issue, and not something that an intake alone will cause.

With the K&N's, and other intakes, the car will occasionally throw a code. No one can really be sure why. Sometimes it never happens, some people have constant issues. None affect the car in any major way, but that bright CEL staring at you is annoying, if you don't have a way to clear it.

I personally have the Weapon-R Intake and have not gotten a CEL. Most of the people w/ Weapon-R's have not had any problems. I chose not to buy the K&N because of the whole oil causing CEL's thing. I love K&N, I have one on my Chevelle, but I think in this situation, the forced induction might pull the oil off the filter and cause a CEL.

You could remove the factory applied oil and re-apply a light coat yourself before you install it. I have heard of that working for people.

Its all up to your choice. They are all very good intakes and all show a sound increase from the S/C as well as a slight power increase.

I really think that the oil on it is about 5-10% of the issue. The Lingenfelter 1000+ hp vettes use K&N intakes, oiled and everything, and don't have any issues with it, and those things are moving far more air. Talking with them, someone pointed out that the likely cause is either the MAF sensor itself, or the 'box' that it sits in is not well made on some cars.

You might be right about the WeaponR ones causing the least amount of CELs though.

I did the welfare ($25) which is a short ram, like the weapon R. Can't notice much dif. in performance. Fixed cold start hesitation issues.

The sound rocks.

I throw CELs when it's really damp out, though. Sometimes get tossed into limp mode. And only when it's in the 30s or 40s F.

Had the K&N since it came out. Got 33k on the '04 right now. Never had a CEL, never went into limp, never cleaned the oil off the filter. Runs great for me, maybe I got a good one.

BTW, when are y'all cleaning the filter? Any recommendations? I'm leaning to around 45k, but I need to see how dirty it is right now.
