Where does the intake hose go??

Where the heck does the little accordian style intake hose run to? I thought it was open at towards the front of the car, and I just noticed that it goes into a box(?) like thing in front of the wheel.

the front fender well. Its goes in there and its all open so it prevents water to a degree from being sucked up in there.

it goes out of the filter box and across and goes up to about the top of the wheel-well.

So that 'box' type thing that it attaches to, thats just open? Where? It looked so sealed up to me. I was suprised that the hose clamped to it, I thought it just went forward and was open at the end.
